yeah, he needs to have waited out the statute of limitations like all the other record breakers have done before going public. im pretty sure his ass is grass right now. Roy waited over a year to make his claim.

IIRC the max speed was actually only like 158 mph, which im surprised by. other record holders have said things like "at no point did we exceed 200 mph" in reference to there top speeds on the run.

When you read the story he's really not said or admitted to anything that can get him nailed - he doesn't say exactly which states he went through and even if he did, let's say Kentucky wants to charge him - all he has to say is "funny thing, we did the exact speed limit all the way through Kentucky and made up our 98 mph average in other states - prove me wrong".

Cool story.
with real time GPS records, which evidently exist, this is easy to do.

Exactly.... If I was a DA I'd be filing multiple subpoenas to get those records... For example our local DA could probably hit him hard, he says he traveled I40 for much of the trip, so it would be safe to assume that by Western OK he was pouring it on...

I read it was used in court to prove speed tickets wrong, but now can be found to be tampered with, (Read slower then real time ) so not usable anymore.
Can they use it one way and not the other? ( as evidence)
If one side can screw with it, can not the other ?

Hmmm... It will be interesting to see what happens... But I'm betting someone will at least try to toss the whole book at them! Prolly a west Tejas DA.. They have to be pretty bored, and they are always running speed traps on I40 out there

I found another article about this today, which DOES mention some specific routes and cities he passed through. Apparently he used "scouts" in different places along the route to check for potential hazards, cops, etc. shortly before they came through in the AMG. Also a lot of electronic assistance stuff - reminds me of the Japanese team in "Cannonball Run":

Atlanta man shatters coast-to-coast 'Cannonball Run' speed record - CNN.com

It'll be interesting to see what the panties-in-knots, uptight bureaucrats try to do - if anything.

If I recall correctly, the original Cannonball runners did not follow a set route. Part of the strategy was picking a route that would yield the quickest time. First car to arrive at the Portifino Inn won...no matter which way you went.
Roy admits to hitting a 158MPH top speed in the Merc on his run for the record. The winners of the second Cannonball, Brock Yates & Dan Gurney, claim to have pushed their Ferrari 365GTB to nearly 175MPH somewhere in New Mexico on their 35h 54m run back in '71.

A) I'm surprised they didn't use a smart phone/radar detector.

B) I'm surprised this group is so supportive of glorified street racing, if an Innocent gets killed or injured in a street race we all condemn the driver(s), but somehow these guys are cool rebels?

Sorry, a few mph over the limit is one thing, but I can't glorify someone that shatters the speed limit on public roads. If you want to break a speed record do it on a race track.

If I was Lamborghini I'd fire him, hope the police obtain the GPS tracking records and prosecute him. Maybe that will keep other nuts from doing this.

Except there were 2 drivers, so, absent additional evidence such as an eyewitness that doesn't take the 5th, or a photo, how does a prosecutor prove the specific defendant was driving at any given moment?

The most incredible aspect of this whole story is the fact that a previous record holder was a Jag XJS.

That it managed to run at high speed for over 30 hours is an achievement on its own.

the cannon ball never had a set route. even back when it was run in the 1970s. it is a point to point race, the route is not important.
