Was someone on here looking for a Tiptronic 996 Turbo ?

Yes, don't remember her name. Maybe Mrs. Lubey.

Thats 'Mr' to you bucko!;)

And yes, that is almost, and I mean almost perfect save for one small detail, the interior is grey not tan leather.

Getting there, I can smell it!

Not much action on the 996 forum, so I'll ask here. Guys on Rennlist (sp?) hammer the 996 interior as bad and ugly. Never seen it in person. I sat in a 997, and thought the interior looked really nice. Is there that big a difference besides the cluster of gauges? I think I'm giving up on a 996 (and the tt is zooming away from my wallet). Maybe a 997 as soon as my SC and a 997 are in the same price range. A year maybe?

Styling is obviously subjective, just look at some pictures. I don't personally find the 996 interior to be offensive, but the 997 has a nicer look and is more consistent with past 911 styling. I actually find the 996 interior to wear better than the 997, which uses a bunch of "soft touch" finish throughout. The soft touch scratches easily, very rarely do I have a 997 that doesn't require some interior parts replacement.

It may be the horseshoe center console and oval-shaped buttons/everything else. It does sort of remind me of old school Compaq computers. I'm pretty sure a turbo would help someone overlook almost anything though :D

The more I commute the more I think 'yea, I could drive a tip....'. :)

Eventually you will all come to the TIP side...and someday used Sportomatic tannys will be the object of lore and admiration to be placed in your midyears in place of the 5 speeds.

Put the lid back on the thinners.......

If 996 had flappy paddles instead of those stupid rockers, I would have gone to a tip. Clutch is painful in an hour traffic cram.

$55,000 Cdn funds. That's about $45,600 US funds

I'll weigh in with some comments considering I own a 2007 Cayman (bought new) and a 2000 996.

The 996 has a black, full leather option interior. The car is 15+ years old and has 176,000 miles and counting. It's my daily driver. The interior has worn VERY well over the nine years and 140,000 miles I've owned and driven it. It feels very robust.

My wife's daily driven Cayman, which shares a very similar interior with the 997, has had many little cheap, hard plastic items break over the years. Window switches have failed. One of the cup holders broke, BOTH of the little backrest handles that allow the driver seat to tip forward have broken off and need to be replaced (how crappy does it have to be that the almost never-used inboard handle broke off?), etc.

While the interior of the Cayman may LOOK more solid and have better styling, the Full leather interior in my much older 996 has actually proven to be significantly more robust. In fact, having taken apart the interior in my 1984 Carrera, I can tell you that the 996 has more robust interior bits than the old air cooled car.

onewhippedpuppy 05-06-2015 10:30 AM

I always found the air-cooled cars to be pretty robust, but they also had a "built in a shed" feel to them. Lots of pieces where it seemed like Hans just lined up the part, drilled the hole, and mounted a panel.

techweenie 05-06-2015 10:33 AM

Another data point: my 987 had a lot of wear on the left inside door handle and steering wheel trim (both worn through silver paint) and on the 'soft touch' temp control. But my car had over 80K miles, so it didn't seem the wear was unwarranted.

I've been looking at 996 and 997 turbos to purchase for the last 4 months, probably pull the trigger this fall. One question:

Do all 996 turbos look like they have negative rake (nose up, rear down attitude)? Doesn't seem like a mileage issue as much as an age issue, '02 & '03s are worse than '05s.

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed this?

Weaver, I agree. I looked for several weeks at 996TT's before deciding to buy a 997TT. That "negative rake" look is in many 996TT's, but it seemed random to me. The rear springs may sag depending on the type of driving it's seen.

Matt (onewhippedpuppy) has a really nice silver 996TT for sale that does NOT have negative rake. If you want a 996TT, you should PM him. The 996TT is a LOT of car for the money.

$28k for a high mileage turbo
