I didn't base my decision on the market, but rather the realization I only had enough bandwidth for 1 old car. And after 6 months of thinking about it I decided I'd sell the 964 (strong market to sell), buy a 996 (strong market to buy), drive it until I get bored, and in the mean time throw more money into my M5. Modern driving experience? Let's just say my wife is happier with the 996. The 964 was loud and somewhat obnoxious, that I'll miss.

So far, all I've done is a 3 spoke sport wheel, short shifter and different wheels. Any pics of your M5? http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...e/DSC_0885.jpg http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...e/DSC_0893.jpg I bought the M030 ROW suspension kit that will hopfully go on over 4th of July weekend. http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...e/DSC_0904.jpg |
Damn this thread I'll need to go back 20 pages and catch up. I was in the market for a older 80's 911 until I read that thread about the 911 bubble and how the prices are crazy.
That thread alone saved me so much cash from buying at the peak of the bubble 911 bubble. So that's off the table but these newer Porsches are more up my alley and not 30 years old too. |
You never sold yours? I will PM you.

If it wasn't a Tip:
https://seattle.craigslist.org/see/cto/d/porsche-turbo-cabriolet-miles/6226814946.html 2004 Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet 16k Miles Local WA Car - $59000 (Seattle Greenlake) 2004 Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet condition: like new cylinders: 6 cylinders drive: 4wd fuel: gas odometer: 16000 paint color: black title status: clean transmission: automatic type: convertible Pristine example of a rare and fast appreciating super car that deserves to be driven! If you're reading this, you most likely know what this car is. These 996/911 Turbo models are quickly appreciating and are more affordable super cars for all 4 seasons. Specs and Facts: * Sold New at Barrier Porsche in Bellevue for $137,000, then resold again at Barrier Porsche in 2010 * Clean Washington Title in Hand, Currently Registered in WA, and has been garaged since day 1 * 2004 911 Turbo Cab with 16k Miles - All Wheel Drive * 415HP, 2 Intercooled KKK K64 Turbos, 413 lb./ft. 0-60 = 4.5 * Automatic/Tiptronic 6 Speed (I know, I know - I wish it was a manual too, but traffic stinks here so, perhaps a blessing) * Non Smoker, No Pets * Clean Carfax Report with NO Damage * Matching Bridgestones * Matching Hardtop with Porsche Carrier and Car Cover * 2 Factory Remote Keys, All Porsche Books and Manuals Note: Preliminarily posting this for sale, as I have a detail appointment next week but thought I'd get the word out now. For those who are VERY serious I can show it to you prior, but after a detail would be ideal. Chris' German inspected it when I purchased it and can share with ONLY serious purchasers the details - needs very little to make concours. These 911 Turbos were 2 year-only in Cabriolet form, and rare with black/black combo with automatic. Emails with name, phone number, and legitimate interest will be responded to (you'd be amazed at how much spam exists). |
So my takeaway from this thread and the 'my car is dead' threads is instead of budgeting 14k for a 996, budget 20k and put 6k in the bank to buy another engine if one is ever needed.
Odds are you'll still have that 6k when you get rid of the car. |
Aren't all 996s affordable by now? My buddy (Jasper on this forum) has a daily driven 996 with almost 200K miles. It is well maintained and driven pretty hard. He would likely struggle to get $20K CDN for it.

And you friend would struggle to get $15Cdn. You can get a clean manual car with half that mileage for way less than $20... |
|
Probably $16-17k?

Liking my 03 C4S so far.
Price wasn't horrible. Could get them for less - but is a cream puff. I did get a gentle reminder from a local deputy this weekend about the variable cost of ownership... |
I'm happy with my recent acquisition: '02 996 Cab with Tip
I was skeptical at first with the Tip but it is a daily driver in crap Washington DC traffic. I wanted to get away from my big Range Rover, which was a pain in city driving. The Tip gives me the opportunity to play around when I want to and then can do its thing when I just want to get to work or home. Current project is adding paddle shifters as described here: 911uk.com - Porsche Forum, Specialist, Insurance, Car For Sale, Finance, Parts & Service : View topic - Complete DIY for tiptronic to paddle shift conversion I had a manual 993 on Oahu with traffic that is worse than DC. I did not want to repeat the clutch leg workout requirement this time! Plus, my '69 gives me all the shifting I'll ever need. 2002 with 36k miles at just over $20k. Hardtop and snow tires for winter, seriously. |
