If he wants to spend $40k he can find a nice low mileage 997 cab. Maybe not only 4000 miles, but in a non collector car who cares?

I still don't quite understand the pricing some of you guys are going by.

2004 Porsche 911 C4S (NOT A CAB) - $23,900 with 100,000 miles

2004 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S AWD Convertible - $39,949 with 49,712 miles

2004 Porsche 911 Turbo AWD Convertible - $53,000 with 26,000 miles

If I were to draw a conclusion from this limited data, it looks like the value of these cars is extremely mileage sensitive, and AWD and or a turbo adds value (obviously).

There also seems to be a steep price hike for the 2005 (997) and newer look, so I don't see where a low mileage 997 cab can be had for 40k.

Perhaps a specific example or several examples to support onewhippedpuppy's claim is in order.

There is a difference between what some of you are willing to pay, and what most of these cars are being listed for. An explanation of this discrepancy may be in order.

The cars you are looking at are irrelevant to your friend, at least I assume. The 4S was a limited edition model with the turbo wide body and AWD, and is frequently seen as the ultimate "regular" 996. The turbo is a different animal entirely, and can easily be found in the $40k range and below.

Here's the results of a 30 second Autotrader search for a 2005+ 911 convertible (997) with under 45k.

Porsche 911 Convertibles for Sale in Wichita, KS 67226: cars between 1000 and 45000 - AutoTrader.com

39 cars, most of them at dealerships. Which means that a little searching can easily yield privately owned cars selling for less.

Thank you very much, I switched the zip code and limited to a 200 mile radius and have two cars listed.

Your friend should fly to California, buy a car and drive home.

All pluses, no minuses. No rust, nice holiday, cheaper car.

George, I would also suggest Craigslist, cars.com, and EBay. Checking all will likely yield some additional cars. Widening the search radius as suggested is a good idea too. These aren't rare cars but they also aren't Camrys, sometimes the perfect car requires a trip. I normally look within 500 miles.

Great color, sport seats, nice painted console and aluminum trim. Unfortunately it also has fugly chrome wheels and is at least $5k overpriced.

A dealership told my friend that he would have to purchase the LN Engineering Retrofit Kit himself, and they would install it for $2,500.00..............WTF?

I'm not sure which dealership he was talking to, but I told him the independent shops to deal with are in Southfield and Farmington Hills, 45 minute drive from Ann Arbor.

Owner supplied parts are typically not the way to go when dealing with automobile repairs. The shops have a lot more pull when it comes to getting warranty work done than a non-attorney car owner in my opinion.

You identified the issue in your first two words: "A dealership". They also may hesitate to warranty the work, as the parts are not Porsche OEM. The previous owner of my 996 had the clutch, IMS, and RMS done at an indie in Tulsa for about $3k including parts.

Bullet proof transmission is always going to cost you more.

Must be out of a Humvee.

Seriously though, that's one nice car - love the color.

From here:

Five Honest Tips For Starting A Car Collection That Won't Lose Money

Tavarish: What about the red-headed stepchild, the 996? Do you think that it'll appreciate?

Zac: The desirable ones have already started to come up a bit, but they did get really cheap, so they probably only have one direction to go from there. They may start to appreciate a little bit, but I don't see it that much. If you take a 911 turbo, there was a long time where you could go pick up 996 turbos for $30 grand all over the place and now you don't see them as much, they're $35k - $40k, so there's been some appreciation.
