The Affordable 996 Thread

I didn't base my decision on the market, but rather the realization I only had enough bandwidth for 1 old car. And after 6 months of thinking about it I decided I'd sell the 964 (strong market to sell), buy a 996 (strong market to buy), drive it until I get bored, and in the mean time throw more money into my M5. Modern driving experience? Let's just say my wife is happier with the 996. The 964 was loud and somewhat obnoxious, that I'll miss.

Wow, small world. I also just picked up a creampuff 996 and have an e28 M5. The 996 is my first water cooled Porsche and I too, am really impressed with it.
So far, all I've done is a 3 spoke sport wheel, short shifter and different wheels.

Damn this thread I'll need to go back 20 pages and catch up. I was in the market for a older 80's 911 until I read that thread about the 911 bubble and how the prices are crazy.

That thread alone saved me so much cash from buying at the peak of the bubble 911 bubble. So that's off the table but these newer Porsches are more up my alley and not 30 years old too.

So my takeaway from this thread and the 'my car is dead' threads is instead of budgeting 14k for a 996, budget 20k and put 6k in the bank to buy another engine if one is ever needed.

Odds are you'll still have that 6k when you get rid of the car.

Aren't all 996s affordable by now? My buddy (Jasper on this forum) has a daily driven 996 with almost 200K miles. It is well maintained and driven pretty hard. He would likely struggle to get $20K CDN for it.

It's all relative. A low mileage, maintained 6-speed with the IMS done is worth double what a tip cab (or any tip car) is worth.

And you friend would struggle to get $15Cdn. You can get a clean manual car with half that mileage for way less than $20...

You will be hard pressed to put a motor in one for 6k. Even doing it yourself .

I'm happy with my recent acquisition: '02 996 Cab with Tip

I was skeptical at first with the Tip but it is a daily driver in crap Washington DC traffic. I wanted to get away from my big Range Rover, which was a pain in city driving. The Tip gives me the opportunity to play around when I want to and then can do its thing when I just want to get to work or home.

Current project is adding paddle shifters as described here:

I had a manual 993 on Oahu with traffic that is worse than DC. I did not want to repeat the clutch leg workout requirement this time! Plus, my '69 gives me all the shifting I'll ever need.

2002 with 36k miles at just over $20k. Hardtop and snow tires for winter, seriously.
