my guess is Amazon is putting pressure on the FAA to develop guidelines/rules by showing this prototype might just work. doubt this configuration will be the final one. they might deliver to a remote distribution center and then drive the last few miles.

How about a drone airliner then? I guarantee this stuff is on the way and will be common.

Probably true but I wouldn't fly on an aircraft without a pilot.

Sure they have lots of automation on modern jets but there always a pilot making the decisions. Is that always a good thing?

I see this happening. I think it will infiltrate large cities first, and then trickle down to suburbs and eventually just becomes the way things are. As for package delivery and face recognition, how many of you physically accept packages? I never do. Packages are left at my door step typically mid day while I am at work. My neighborhood is safe, and I have never had anything stolen off the porch. I don't see any difference in how this would work. Hell, anyone who I have paypal'd with has my home address and can use google earth to see a 360 degree view of my home... I think that a robot couldn't spot it from 300 feet and accurately get a box on my door step.

The redundancy in auto pilots, gyros, power generation, etc. makes large UAS a much safer aircraft than a manned aircraft.

I don't see unmanned passenger airliners ever, although perhaps a reduction in crew from two to one.

FEDEX and the rest very much want unmanned cargo aircraft, for any number of reasons, one being that unmanned aircraft have a much broader weather envelope in the launch and terminal phases of flight.

When I manged the Navy's Global Hawk Maritime Demonstration Program, I always asked the engineers to call me and let me know when they were landing. I'd hustle out to the LSO shack at Pax and watch.

It landed in nearly the exact same spot every time.

Wait until the process servers get ahold of this tech.

I'd find some way of having the drone track you by your cel phone and just loiter til you were outside.

Need to have it programed to play a very robotic "You have been served" recording just to add insult to injury!

As someone who works in aviation, I can tell you that the weakest link safety wise is usually the human behind the stick. In an ideal world in modern aviation, the pilot interraction on the flight deck is minimized as much as possible. The reality is that unmanned pax transportation is likely years and years away form a public confidence stand point, but that safety could be increased pretty quickly by removing the humans from the equation.

There are far more drones flying in public airspace than most people are aware, there are fully autonomous border patrols 24/7 on both your Northern and Southern borders. Thes are automated aircraft that make decisions themselves in the event of an airspace conflict, that interact with ATC just like manned flights do.

Just another reason I have no interest in owning a cell phone.

Cell phones, FB, TV, mortgages, jobs....when some of you guys go on about freedom I have to laugh.
We are all slaves, just some more than others.

Not putting miles on your car is like not having sex with your girlfriend, so she'll be more desirable to her next boyfriend.
