Mea culpa....

I insulted someone (on the technical side even) and i apologized privately. I also apologize here.

While that Pelican should remain nameless - I don't want to reignite the issue - I have to say that as a result my first and last name, phone number, address and 1998 purchase money first trust deed amount were posted publicly.

It's a very odd feeling. I had NO IDEA that stuff was available online, especially with my limited screen name. It apparently didn't take much work. i suppose it's a wake-up call to me - and I thought it was worth sharing with others. While I should not have called him a name simply because i thought he was wrong, I am shocked at what happened.

There appears that there is nothing I can do it about it either. Other than delete my Pelican account. Pretty strange... I can't say exactly why but it kinda feels like I've been robbed.

Very strange.

ps. for all of you that know how to do this, I'll make it easy for you if you just send me a pm I'll tell you who I am.

Wow. Sorry to hear that happened to you David! The internet is truly a scary place, and I had a now banned Pelican pull a similar stunt on me a few years back. Still feels like I was robbed.

That's a lousy thing to do. Won't the mods delete the post containing you personal details?

I hope you don't leave us David, you make a good contribution to the place. I also hope that you reported this to the moderators, anyone vindictive enough to post your personal details online does not need to be part of this community. Period.

Getting into an anonymous internet based argument is pretty easy to do....sometimes it will escalate to insults or name calling. Even at that point, its not cool (I have found myself here as well....guilty as charged). This seems like somebody really took this to far.

I'm sure you feel that your privacy was invaded but if the person found the info online, then it was already public information. All he/she did was aggregate the information here on Pelican.

That being said, it sounds like it was done with malicious intent. Did the person think that posting the info for all Pelicans to see would somehow injure you?

Wasn't someone banned for releasing Snowman's location? This sounds much worse.

I would have to agree, that should be the basis for a permanent banning. Personal attack.

The snowman thing was different. IIRC he'd been taunting about where his house was and how much it was worth and how it was in the mysterious part of San Clemente (?) where house values were going up during the housing crash (this was quite a long time ago). Then he intentionally posted his extended zipcode. Someone who knew the zipcode format simply said "based on that zipcode your address is X". Also, snowman himself was banned right around that time for various offenses, I can't remember the details but they had to do with publicly attacking and making false statements about our host's business practices.

David you have my sympathy. I can understand how folks get carried away on the internet as it is easy to get offended or offend. Although you may have insulted somebody the other person did the wrong thing as well. Accept the fact that you may have escalated the issue but move on.

If you were talking face to somebody in real life you likely would have walked away. I can see how things escalate on this forum as some people get snippy. I refuse to respond. Life is too short to respond to this kind of stuff.

Enjoy your day. Really. No sweat...move on.

How do you just delete your Pelican account? Is that really a feature of the forum software?

Most, (but not all), members here choose to be anonymous on a public forum. "Outing" someone's personal info to the world is a true weasel move. This board has a lot of cool people but also some amazing creeps and cowards. They tend to congregate and post heavily in PARF but sometimes the bad vibes can poison other forums.

I'm sorry to hear about this but, A) a moderator can and will delete that person's post, and B) they should be banned from their IP address. What an ass wipe move.

I think of this place as Wayne's living room and try to comport myself accordingly.

It helps to think of the line from Harvey:

"In this world, Elwood, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant." Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant.

Best to all and, if I don't post again before Christmas; A Merry Christmas to all Pelicans.

An individual in PARF posted some minor personal info about me.
Little did he know I had all kinds of dirt on him, personal stuff, embarrasing stuff.
I didn't do it.
Didn't want to stoop to that level, and I was pretty sure the mods would frown on that sort of thing. As much as I enjoy poking them with a stick occasionally, I try not to poke too hard.

Some of the info was provided by other pelicans, some of it took just a few minutes on the interwebs.

Botom line is, there really is no such thing as privacy anymore. It's an illusion.
The only real safety is blending in and not doing anything to draw attention or get singled out.

An update:

- He apparently located me from a federal election contribution record and my mediocre screen name. He said it only took five minutes. That's the main reason I made the post above.
- Since that record cannot be changed, I suggested my only option was (have the mods) delete my account on PP
- the guy removed his posts as did I
- I called him a "wimp" because he claimed that he knew better than a very seasoned engine builder I know and wouldn't admit that he'd only rebuilt one engine. Turns out he actually had a great deal of experience but didn't want to admit it for some reason. So it goes...
- What I said was wrong, and as stated above, I would never have done so in person. I felt like I was defending someone else, and I let my emotions get a hold of me. I think this is a first for me in my 8 years at PP.
- While I have not now, nor ever have been a victim of identity theft, I got a taste of it last night and that's not pretty. Shocking actually. Especially as someone called my house based on the phone number in the post and started telling my son how wrong I was.
- I do know this is Wayne's site and I am very grateful for it. I will not be doing any name calling in the future.

Live and learn. I learned last night that he interwebs know I'm 50 - still trying to get that learning thing down....

First paragraph: completely true.
Second paragraph: I do not know what he thought. It certainly got my attention and I immediately deleted everything as per his request. I was shocked - especially after my son called my cell phone. The truth is though, I really have nothing to hide.
