Was there a large flushing sound when this happened?

I've been to the museum, and it's awesome, even if you are not a Corvette guy like most of us here. That's pretty scary stuff, especially the video of the cars getting eaten.

Odd that the hole is in the middle of the floor like that, it doesn't seem random.

Typically soil borings are limited to the building's corners and where you expect to put the foundation. With no foundation in the middle of this cone shaped room there would have been no reason to do a test bore right there.

Still, if it happened one place, I'd be weary of adjacent spaces (underground springs/rivers). Lots of recent innovations in ultrasounds for geologist, maybe they will call one in to help the structural engineer.
I would guess that someone forgot to connect a storm water pipe or sewer lateral. With a hole that deep, I would probably guess sewer main.

The storm drain would have to be sizable to say the least, even over a decade I cannot image such work - but possible.

I had that in the back of my mind, but a water main rupturing would make more sense to achieve the magnitude of hollowing out such a large area.

However all the mud would have to have a path down, way down.

That means a cave network or something below (underground stream?).

It's just not one thing, it's a rare combination of several things gone wrong.

A combination of man and nature colliding.

They are several miles from the Barren River, but right next to I-65, not sure if these are factors.

The museum is 30 miles from the largest known cave system on the planet. Sinkholes are common.

Bingo, we have a winner.

The site is near the red 65 on this map, the green part is Mammoth Cave National Park.

So they just forgot that there are caves nearby? I doubt that.

There is clearly water erosion at work. The source of the water can be intermittent or seasonal. All it needs is somewhere to drain, and the rest is all downhill.

Agreed, but also note just like surface rivers, underground rivers can change their path over time.

Sad to see this happened but that said, if you want to see a real automotive sink-hole, buy a fixer upper Mercedes Benz, Porsche, or Audi!

I think that I have something like this happening on one of the corners of my house. I noticed a hole by the foundation real close to one of my downspout discharges. I was planning on taking a look till my youngest daughter said that she saw an 8' snake go into the hole. Maybe I should do some investigation once it warms up a little. Now that I think about it, I really should check it out a little sooner considering my bed sits right over the area where the hole is located.

Karst topography. It doesn't care what type of car. It's still going to happen.

Maybe they should put a fence around Mammoth Cave National Park to keeps the caves in.
