An update:
Apparently, Bilstein shocks and struts CAN go bad just sitting. I was complaining about the harsh ride a few posts back and did not realize that it has one completely blown-out front strut and the other side feels way too stiff. The rears feel "bouncy." It's going to get all new ones and should make a world of difference!
Just need to decide what to install, leaning towards Konis and not the firm ones. The stock ride ones, because they will match the frequency of the stock springs, which I think it still has. Need to confirm.

I thought you could send Bilsteins back for rebuilds for pretty reasonable money.

My mechanic tells me he can usually get the Bilstein guy to replace it under lifetime warranty.

I think the Corrodo was the replacement, one with a v-6 the other with an inline 4, both zippy little cars, both had mechanical issues...

Hey Denis,
Do you have a thread for your Evo?

That was an extremely short ownership experience. I sold it at the same time I was posting about it here, maybe 10 years ago?

Yeah, those were cool but mine is the earlier 8V motor. The turbo on it is a nice cheat, though.
![]() I worked at a VW dealer when that 16V was new, they were great.

I'd love to have either a Mark I or II. I remember when the 16V came out, a 123HP Volkswagen was a big deal! and it only weighs 2287Lbs! I really wanted one - I still have the brochure.

Kurt, that's true but the Mk1 only weighs ~1900 lbs. on the showroom floor!

Oh, I realize that, makes the Mark I even better in some regards. I wish cars today weren't so portly. if a car today is 3000 lbs (hard to find even that) it's considered a lightweight.

Mk1 five speed was 2040 pounds per Road and Track test but yes, a light car.

I've been driving and working on the car this weekend, it's coming along nicely. Plenty of maintenance items to tackle but overall, it's running great. Nice boost from the turbo and just general tightness from its condition. It's the newest old car I've ever owned but it's still old. Fun to drive and very sporty but extra caution in modern traffic is a must...it's really small and low. Had a new Escalade do a panic stop behind me yesterday, that was a *pucker moment*.
![]() I love taking pictures of it, it's really a beauty. Here is what a 32k mile interior looks like: ![]() ![]() Here's a size perspective:
