Those lobes look so absurdly clean and proper, they'd make a Ferengi forget about profit. Ha! ( nod to the Star Trek faithful,
)Great pics and update. How's the exhaust? Any corrosion? I'm guessing that's might be the only place for any at all. Such a clean looking beauty. Quote:

Denis, you either have the best karma or you’ve sold your soul to the Devil. That car is soooo special.

![]() I worked on it all day today and should have it running tomorrow. Just going through the brakes and wheel bearings, engine is ready to fire-up. I put in a good used fuel pump and removed the intake, CIS and turbo plumbing, the turbo itself is pristine and spins freely but the intake plumbing needed some cleaning, etc. Stay tuned, I'll update when it runs.

What a great story and car. Well done Denis! I worked a summer in the highway department for the State of WA. My co worker in the back of the crew truck was a basketball player at St. Martin's college and drove an MK1 Scirocco. He had to be at least 6'5". I couldn't believe he fit in the thing. It was green if my memory serves correctly. Very cool car.

I drove an '81, since new, just like this one for 16 years. I took it everywhere and put 250K miles on it. This thread really has me lusting for a replacement. But they're not easy to find.
Fun side story about my car: My father, the VW dealer, had two red ones on the lot. He let me have the first one. Next day Joe Montana came by and bought the other red one. Then he won the super bowl and replaced it with a red Ferarri.

Damn, I miss my 81 S a lot after following this thread. A lot of really fun drives and fun times in that car. Always felt like siht when I stored it for the winter and moved into whatever winter beater that I had at the time, even the '78 I bought from a rugby team mate cheap and drove a couple of winters (already had tin worm).
I have convinced myself that all 3 Sciroccos were merely placeholders for the 911. Makes parting with it more palatable. I will try to find and post a pic. Denis, glad you found and are reactivating this piece of history.

No love for Corrados, at least not from me.
I had a 1990 G60, it had weird electric issues, including the automatic seat belts not moving back into position when you closed the door. It wasn't as raw, as simple as the Scirocco. I had 4 Mk1 Sciroccos. First was a '75 that I bought as a parts car. It was already rusted out when I bought it around 1986-87. Second was a '79, I loved everything about that car except it was only a 4 speed and at 70 it ran around 3500rpm. That got old. Traded that for a Rabbit race car. Ran it a couple of years, traded it for a '78 Scirocco race car. Had great success with that, then I stupidly used the suspension pieces from that to build a '83 GTi race car. Sold that after one season, and tried to rebuild the '78 as a SCCA Production car. Sold it as an unfinished project and bought another '79 ITB Scirocco. I ran that a couple years and sold it to a couple of guys who wanted to ice race it. I saw it a few years after that, they had rolled it at a race and it was sitting behind one guys barn. Sad. The '79 street car was almost the same color as the OP's car. I do miss that car. If I could swap in a 5 speed I'd drive that today, if I could find a rust free one. |

I’ve gotten to the point of trying to start it and it looks like I’m not getting any fuel to the fuel distributor under the hood. I don’t have another set of hands around right now, can any of you guys from memory tell me where to look first and second? I haven’t even looked for the fuse box yet, left the owners manual at home.
The fuel pump is good, or at least it was yesterday. Thanks.

And what about the injectors? My 3.2 injectors were all stuck. Pulled each, used a tiny screwdriver to press in the exit port and free it up.

From memory, the fuses and relays are just above the hood release. The CIS system has the pump and an accumulator. The pump runs briefly with the ignition on to build pressure until running. ...or maybe the pump runs continuously with the ignition on. Anyway, it has the 4 primary injectors and a cold start injector on the end of the intake casting to get the party going.
oh, and does have a WUR.

Thanks for that! I got it running, lots of cracking lines open and pouring Seafoam into the holes where the banjo bolts connect the fuel lines to distributor. I also sprayed carb cleaner directly into it. It eventually got unstuck and the car started. It ran like crap for a while but eventually the clean gas with Seafoam added cleaned the digestive tract out and it now purrs like a kitten.
![]() I don’t have a good “first start” video because it was a lot of cranking and barely running, stalling, etc. There was 21 year old gas/varnish in the entire system. I left it idling once it would stay running and it smoothed out after a while. Tomorrow it gets a new air filter and fuel filter plus plugs and wires, then an oil change and filter. The oil and filter are from 1995 and the oil looks perfect, btw.

Congrats on getting her fired up ! I would keep a spare fuel filter on hand , as you get more run time on her the possibility of gunk getting dislodged increases . Good luck as you get her closer to road worthy .
