I lived with my older cousin, who is an Architect in SF, when I was a freshmen in college. He had a white 1977 Scirocco.

As much as I loved my 1972 2002, his car had all the right notes, especially the exhaust. What a fine ride, miles ahead of the older BMW.

Yes! oh Yes.

I got a red '81 Scirocco new in late 1980 and drove it until 1995. 16 years of fun and adventure in that car. They handle great.

Sweet! Hope the car is a 75, so smog check exempt.

I thought the sticker said BAE, but upon closer observation, it does not.
It's a lot newer than that, I'd guess '79-'81 by bumpers. I don't care about smog, it will pass or how did he drive it here all these years?

Didn't Fred just have a turbo'ed Mk1 Scirocco in his shop recently? Where is that thread now...

chapo 02-13-2014 07:09 PM

I had a mk 1 scirocco s that I only paid $1200 for. Probably the best car I ever owned. I would time myself from my college to my house every night to try to break my record. I also would take it up to the freshly grade sub-divisions at night and pre-run the dirt roads. Great car. Took a beating, couldn't kill it . Actually sold it for more than I bought it for .

onewhippedpuppy 02-13-2014 07:11 PM

Do it!

Steve Carlton 02-13-2014 07:22 PM

Always liked Mk 1 Sciroccos. Named after a warm wind.

trekkor 02-13-2014 07:28 PM

Love it!

MMARSH 02-13-2014 08:00 PM

Very cool car. I had a Mk1 when I was stationed in Germany back in the 80's. I'm sure that car is a just a pile of rust now.

Sweet find, correct era for a Calloway turbo conversion & should be a blast to drive. Any pix of the engine?? Good luck & hope you get it..

Tobra 02-13-2014 08:51 PM

Good luck D money, sweet little car.

Those are some baller wheels too.

aigel 02-13-2014 09:05 PM

Yeah - where are the under-hood pics? :)

Scirocco leaves me totally cold, but Scirocco tubo? Just got warmer ... like that jet stream it is named after. :)

I always though the Scirocco looked like a poor man's DeLorean. I just learned the reason. Both are GG cars! :D

Did not get under hood or interior shots because car was locked and he wasn't sure where the key is. He's going to talk to his bro and find out about key and whether he's ready to part with it.

It likely is a Calloway turbo, he said something about the turbo set-up being possibly worth more than the rest of the car. I can't wait to see under the hood.

I love that there are so many all-around car people here who appreciate this car. Porsche guys are often all-around gear heads, (hence the Hemi thread, etc.), not sure if we'd find that on certain other boards.

aigel 02-13-2014 09:35 PM

Yes, of course I knew the car was locked - otherwise we'd have interior and under-hood shots.

What would you do with he car? Drive it? Garage queen? Flip?

It won't be long and the Germans will re-import these, if not already. They have hit the magic 30 year mark and a lot of mid-aged guys like us want their wet teen dreams become true!

If I got my hands on this car, I would drive it. How long I kept it would depend on how much I love it. I'd be surprised if I did not love it a lot.

I would never own a car that I did not drive. But I have a lot of cars, so nothing gets driven all the time.

speeder 02-13-2014 10:58 PM

After doing some quick research, it has to be a Calloway. No one else made turbo kits for those cars. They were quasi-factory approved with the kitted cars available new from certain dealers on the east coast, complete with warrantees from an aftermarket underwriter.

Here is the recent thread from Fred on the one in his shop, apparently these Calloway cars are extremely desirable.

Mk1 Sciroccos in general have become quite collectible. Incredible styling+decent performance+relatively low production numbers=collectible. Combined with the fact that they were not considered special enough to preserve when new and most wound up in the junk yard, equals a very small supply of good ones today.

Keep in mind that the owner of the one I saw today may have zero interest in selling, but I can dream until I hear for sure. :)

Steve Carlton 02-13-2014 11:16 PM

Long hood Volkswagen.

Rusty914s 02-14-2014 08:01 AM

Love that car, hope that you get it. I have a friend who bout a 92? I don't know much about the. But sure are pretty.

jyl 02-14-2014 08:27 AM

Beautiful. I always liked the Scirroco, esp the Mk 1. And the Mk 1 GTI. Classics!
