It's easy to spend your initial budget in gear. Shoei, summer, and winter riding jackets, boots, gloves and you're already close to two grand.

Not sure if you would consider a crusier. Kawa Vulcan 500cc. $2199. Low saddle height could be good for the wife.

Along those lines. Look for a 535 virago, low seat, greAt bikes, and usually can be found sub 2k!

Thanks a bunch Hard Drive! I'll try to find time to arrange a trip up to B-Ham this week and have a gander at those.

And that is the motorcycle equivalent of a late model Cutlass Supreme.

Sorry Sid, but that is a snoozer and a half.

He said he wanted a low seat height, and cheap! That fits the requirements...

Not saying id ride it, just saying it's a good low cheap cruiser. Probably more reliable than a wrung out tired crotch rocket.

I will go against the majority and say buy the Hawk. It will make a great "starter" bike and one that clean will hold its value when you go to sell.

I would get new tires, flush the rbake system, oil change, get it running and just ride it. That bike will have plenty of go.

I am a sucker for classic Hondas (see sig).

Maybe you should be thinking of getting one for your wife, share it, then get one for you when you get more experience and have the cash. It's way more fun when the wife rides her own, 2 up sucks.

The only comment I would make is look for a newer bike as a starter bike. I am kind of leery of using an almost 30 year old bike as a starter. I have both an 80's sport-bike and also a Ninja that is just a few years old. Night and day difference in both ride comfort and stability. I would recommend spending a little more money and getting a newer (smaller displacement) bike. The feel of a newer bike is better. The way a newer bike rides is also better. A 30 year old bike is good for a collector but not so much for a new rider in my opinion.

That Nighthawk was pretty cool back in the day. Did not age too well though. I think a used SV650 is the best suggestion so far.

what might be the best all around bike - Suzuki DR 650 great on and off road. keep two sets of rims and your set for hwy and around town and another with dirt oriented tires for adventures.

SV650 is a great bike (so I am told) but people tend to buy them and hold onto them... when I was shopping for a bike it was at the top of my list but couldn't find many used ones for sale out there.

If your budget really is only $2,000 for everything, including riding gear, maybe you should wait and save up a little more. Starting out from ground zero, with no gear whatsoever, $2,000 will not buy a reliable motorcycle and quality gear. One or the other, but certainly not both. The last thing you want to do is start out with a bike that needs work and cheap riding gear - a recipe for frustration and disappointment, not to mention increased exposure to the safety risks inherent in motorcycling.

I would suggest rounding up the gear you will need before you even begin shopping bikes. A lot of new riders on a budget get this one backwards, buying the bike first. Most can't resist riding it - maybe borrowing a helmet and making do on everything else. Yikes...

Like Todd (nostatic), I'm a firm believer in ATGATT. We have both, in the last few years, suffered quite serious wrecks. Todd was not wearing riding pants, and suffered needless injury to his knee. I was wearing everything and still got pretty darn beat up. In the end, the fact that we are still both here, sitting upright, typing with our own fingers, and back to riding speaks volumes about quality riding gear. I'm convinced we both would have fared far, far worse had we not been wearing the gear.

Anyhoo, enough preaching. There are lots of great suggestions here for motorcycles that would meet your requirements. The overall theme is a middleweight, mid displacement twin or single. Pick a flavor you like and get going. But please, get the gear first. And don't scrimp.

OUTSTANDING ADVICE!!!

There lots of online sources for used gear in excellent condition at a fraction of new prices. Here are just a few.

Sport-touring.net

IBMWR.org clothing for sale

IBMWR.org gear for sale

I have purchased all of my jackets and all but one pair of my gloves used from the sources above. I have yet to be disappointed or burned on a deal.
