This is beyond horrible. OK, some black humor. But it's unbelievable that there are 260-some people missing--most of them kids--and some (many?) of them are likely to be still alive, trapped in the overturned and submerged ship. When every second counts, help is just moments (or days in this case) away...

the Vice-principle of the HS...
who made the trip and survived the sinking..

was found hanging from a tree this morning..
police believe he hung himself out of shame...

as for the Captain..
might I suggest..
measure height...
some chains around his feet & hands
insert in tube 3 inches taller than he..
give each of the families a glass of water..
cheer's..

At this point more likely a recovery operation. Hypothermia would have taken out any survivors. Horrific tragedy. As a parent of a teen who has gone on school trips, this is one of a parents' worst nightmares.

I have been to some small islands near there. It is actually a very beautiful place. The islands rise up out of the ocean dramatically, vertically, the bottom is probably much the same.
All ships are fallible to some degree. The ocean takes what it wants.
My guess, since it was undeniably off-course is that 1. the hull hit a rock,
2. made a huge gash,
3. water influx,
4.tilt-over,
5. sunk.

my coworker said they are pumping air to the survivors. i cant imagine the fear those kids are facing. he thinks the survivors are all over the vessel, clinging to air pockets.

this is an awful predicament.

The logical mind tells us that. But as a parent you know that we keep on looking and trying until those kids are all proven dead.

Slightly moot point, as the damage has been done, but did the ship run into trouble because of a breach in the hull? Or because of a shift in its cargo load?

When the boat turned turtle, was there any gash in the hull? I haven't seen any pics to confirm this.

It was a ferry, carrying something like 150 vehicles. Would a ferry ever turn quickly enough to unsettle those vehicles (like that cargo jet flying out of Baghram) causing the ship to list enough to start taking on water?

There are stories from Pearl Harbor of men rescued after days trapped in a capsized battleship.

My understanding is the cargo, including cars, may have not been properly secured. Secondly, it was demonstrated that a broad, flat area like the deck for the cars, can take as little as 1" of water covering the surface to cause stability of the entire ship to come into question. Most likely scenario goes, ship is in the fog and off course when a sharp turn is made to bring ship back into correct location which causes the cargo to shift. Ship begins to list, water enters the auto deck causing further instability as captain and crew try to stabilize it. Water continues to pour in and ship capsizes. I have heard no report of damage to the hull. The loud bang that was reported could very well be the shifting cargo hitting the steel sides of the ship.

My thoughts include the broadcast to the passengers to remain in their places was an attempt to get the ship under control/stability and hundreds of moving passengers would make that difficult. I also think the crew was never properly drilled on evacuations given only one life boat was launched, there was, apparently, no pre-cruise instruction to passengers, and there was never an order to abandon ship. Add to this the Korean cultural element of always obeying authority, be it an elder or government official, and you have the makings of a terrible, terrible tragedy.

Hawaiian waters are not 50 degrees f. It will be hypothermia that would cut the chances of surviving in an air pocket.

Do we need to balance the thread with recycled jokes about the Titanic or 9/11?

Keyboard heroes. Good thing your kids or relatives weren't there.

To date, this site could be the first and only to publish jokes about this tragedy. Congrats.
https://www.google.com/search?q=titanic+jokes&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-USfficial&client=firefox-a&channel=sb#channel=sb&q=korean+ferry+jokes&rls=org.mozilla:en-USfficial&start=10

Then insert Pelican Parts in front of the search terms. Bingo

yea..that is my top two worst tragic ways to die. trapped with an air bubble in pitch black..treading water, floating dead friends, cries from within other air pockets...no way.

my eyes water just thinking about it. the ones with someone sharing air are lucky in a way..imagine if you were alone?..and hear cries and splashing from the dark..

shiver. i hope they save some of them..man i hope they do.

Fail to slow down near islands (as required), captain not at helm, delegated that duty too far down the ladder to someone unqualified who realizes he's dangerously off-course, panics and makes too sharp of a turn causing the ship to lean, which causes the cargo to shift, which capsizes the ship.

THAT'S how ya do it.

Death toll now at 128.

174 passengers still unaccounted for.

Quote:
According to the Korea Herald, the captain is likely to face a life sentence in prison. On Monday a chief engineer on board attempted suicide but is reportedly in stable condition and will soon be summoned for further questioning.

Not all crew members are accused of wrongdoing, though. Some reportedly gave their life jackets to passengers, and one woman refused to leave before helping students off the ship. She was later found dead, becoming one of the at least seven crew members who lost their lives or are still missing.

OK. I'll ask. What do the circles on the above image represent? Trapped passengers?

Ship had 3 times normal capacity
