...and I think Layne Staley, despite his addictions and demons was my favorite lead singer from the "grunge era".
Totally agree about Cantrell and Frusciante...both very technical considering the genre. And Matt Cameron speaks for himself!!!!

Pearl Jam had so many great songs. However, lyrically, I always thought they wrote a perfect song with "Black".

The band was Pearl Jam, it was a great show, he even gave us Mookie Blaylock T-shirts.

We hung out with him after the show & went to his house. I remember his girlfriend freaking out when she saw my buddy's pistol sticking out his pants when he sat down. She was Nazi storm trooper that I believe was largely responsible for Dave's departure from the band.

I've seen them a couple times since, but not since the 90s. They lost me after Vitalogy.

I saw a lot of bands in the 90s, I remember going to the OK Hotel to see this grunge wanna be band from Cali named STP, I was very skeptical, but it was only $2. Turned out they blew my socks off, great show.

I wish I could have seen Mother Love Bone, probably my favorite grunge music along with Gruntruck.
about where I'm at with Pearl Jam, and as far as I'm concerned Gruntruck, Mother Love Bone and Skin Yard owned that era- Gruntruck especially.

(Notice, no mention of Nirvana)

Always thought "Ten" was one of the albums you would want to have if stuck on a desert island for life. The whole album is amazing and their best, IMHO.

This one is also one of my favourites from Pearl Jam. Bought the CD just for this song.

Yeah, growing up in the PNW (in the 90's), it was impossible not to be influenced by (and like) a lot of that music. Mother Love Bone, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Screaming Trees, Alice in Chains (and their collaborations like Temple of the Dog & Mad Season), etc. And of course their "predecessors" like The Melvins, Green River, Fastbacks, etc.

Seeing shows at the Moore, Paramount, Crocodile, Fenix, Off Ramp, and RKCNDY, driving out to the Gorge, etc. Ah, the memories...

As a Seattleite of the era Pear Jam never really did it for me. Mudhoney and Tad were more my cup of tea. As far as Seattle is concerned now, you can't do much better than the Melvin's /Big Business.

I never really got Pearl Jam all that much. I liked a few songs off 10, but I think they were WAY overplayed.

I always thought this was cool, though..

King Buzzo is actually playing tonight at a small venue that I frequent. If I weren't at the beach this weekend, I'd probably go...

Were friends with Mike McCready and his wife Ashley. Absolutely great people. Were going to see them in Cincinnati in the fall.
Funny timing... a few days ago I listened to Yellow Ledbetter about a dozen times. I remembered that a Pelican had mentioned being friends with him. For me his playing on that song is right up there with David Gilmore solos as some of my favorite stuff I've ever heard. (Different styles, but that same idea of just playing in that perfect groove.) Now I gotta go practice...

Was at a few of their live shows during their prime and earlier big album releases. Both outdoor venues of which can sometimes acoustically mess ones head up. But nope.... those shows were massive. I don't exactly know the length of one concert but Vedder was non-stop on cue and it was a looooong performance. Crowd was wild and didn't expect the extra's. Not sure how he had the strength and I later learned, after that show they played impromptu at a bar!

(Personally, I never followed into the grunge look, style or attitude but do like the era of music.)

really was too bad about layne doing himself in...he was a talent and alice was an amazing band. I can only imagine what they could have continued to produce!!

My sentiments as well. I appreciated them, liked quite a few of their songs (still do) but they were everywhere. Didn't help that my little sis had them on constant rotation in her bedroom growing up.
Still, lot of good relevant music came out of that era. It's a shame that some (Layne, Kurt, Starr, Phaff, etc) couldn't make it through, using that time as a springboard to better things rather than as a personal coda.

This one remains one my favorites:

Wow, that brings back some memories. I remember waiting for their 2nd CD in college, listened to the basically nonstop for a year. So many good times were had while PJ was playing.

I have their Live at the Gorge set and think it's great. I love their music.
