I had a 75 gal. Rheem in a small apartment building that lasted 17 years. I bought it from a plumbing supply place, not a big box. It only started leaking after I started bragging about how it had lasted 17 years.

Maybe look into a gas tankless set-up?

I have seen the results of failed hot water heaters first hand, on several occasions. The least damaging of which involved drywall/paint work on the heater pedestal, and a stained garage floor. The worst of which involved those same issues, plus warped/ruined full-length garage cabinet bases, and accompanying mold remediation.

Why would you want to heat hot water? Mine heats cold water into hot.

I have a bunch of apt bldgs and my plumbers use Bradford White. However, I don't have any 75 gallon heaters, only 40 gallon units. If you can, get the ones where you can light the pilot light yourself. They started replacing the water heaters with sealed unit that have a sight window and a button igniter. Those things seem to fail much faster than the manual light ones. The manual ones are much easier to light, too, at least for me.

You forgot the smiley, Jim.

But he's right, flyenby... when you purchase this "thing," you will find out that there is no such thing as a hot water heater.

It is a water heater... says so right on the box.

THIS...

My electric off peak tank just took a dump.

I'm getting a GAS instantaneous heater to replace is... 10 year warranty on the core is pretty standard.
And I'm also getting a remote temp control panel. That way you can set the temp at 50C so you don't have to add cold water to get the right temp for a shower but you can also crank it up when you need hotter water.

..... If you think about it it's "logically" the best way to go.

With the gas units don't you have to have the gas co. come out to confirm you installed it right (no gas leaks) before use?

Being plumbers we use AO Smith, never a problem and great customer support. I removed my gas water heater and installed a Navien instantaneous heater in my home. Fires only on demand and has never ending hot water. It's especially nice for a whirlpool or filling a tub. I have a NR-240 which has 199K btu max output. With 55° water in it will make 7.4 gal per minute with 120° water out.

The only "problem" is venting of the IHWH. It requires an inlet and outlet line in 3" PVC. If you can mount it on an outside wall then your 99% done. Just drill two holes and vent thru the wall.

I love my IHWH. But, a good ole AO Smith is less than half the cost and will last a long time especially if you flush it out every six months and change the anode every few years.

Yup. We're getting one of these installed shortly, with remote controls for the kitchen and both bathrooms. You can also set user profiles into the remotes.

We put in a AO Smith unit. Our our water heater was working fine but it was 20 years old. We did a preemptive replacement. To keep up with current code we now have a PVC drain pipe hooked to a pan under the water heater. The pipe goes out through a wall and would drain into a flower bed.

If you're looking for a power vented 75 gallon tank Rheem, and Bradford White are pretty good.
A.O.Smith makes an 80 gallon atmospheric tank (standing pilot) which is a commercial tank.

I tend to look at the warrantee and feel the weight. They all seem to be designed to fail. Some have more sacrificial metal than others.

On tankless - I don't see that tech as being any less susceptible to breaking open.(same components and pressures, but with a MUCH bigger burner, that hits it hard and fast.)

hmmm... I'm fairly certain that if you have a cold water heater, you want to replace it with one that will be a hot water heater.

And those things are almost constantly heating hot water --to make it hotter, as it losses heat.

a remote temp control panel - that's pretty cool...

My tank sits at about 50C (for the shower) but the appliances (wash machine and dish-washer) have internal heaters to push to ~100C. I like that the taps don't pour scolding hot water; and of course, less heat loss at the tank.

"Instant-on" is the way to go IMO Rinnai, Rheem, Triangle Tube or Takagi.
I have the Takagi but am currently switching to Triangle-Tube because that will not only heat the water it will heat the whole house. My boiler went so I though why not?
Anyone want to buy a slightly used perfectly good Takagi? It is a great thing to have : endless hot water.
