I am old enough to remember when she was funny, clever funny. She had a hit comedy album in the 80's for chrissake.

I can't remember seeing her after about '86, though. Odd, that.

Same here... pretty sure I saw her open for the Smothers Brothers in Las Vegas (yeah, I'm dating myself) I fear most of you only know her for her critic work at the awards shows (that I never watch)... she was very funny back in the day when she did standup.

Hmmm. Hate on a comedian? Wow. This is a tough crowd. Suggest saving all that love for the despotic rulers of the world who make it a better place for themselves.

I'd post the video of Joan River's Roast, but it seems today Youtube decided to act like Time Warner did yesterday and take a rest. Here's a bypass link. BTW, if you don't enjoy really blue humor, bypass it.

https://search.yahoo.com/search?p=joan+rivers+roast&ei=UTF-8&fr=chrf-yff30

While the show's joke quotient wasn't especially high among its guest roasters, Rivers pulls it out with pretty good comebacks. Not bad for a 77 yo broad. Again, fair warning.

She is funny, old, *****y, plastic, 81 years old, I think.
If she lives she will still be all of the above

Actually, she was sorta funny here. Good for smut, I guess. But I like clever comedy, not smut.

"stopping breathing" during a procedure on vocal chords (or any procedure in surgery) is not especially uncommon. Sub-optimal airway and/or ventilation situations do not routinely result in a patient being listed in "critical condition." This is not to say that problems don't occur but the report linked is strongly suspect for being incomplete, sensationalized, inaccurate or all of the above.

I thought she was "un-dead" for some time now.

They said the surgery was "routine". Routine surgery for Rivers is 6-7 hours of cosmetic surgery, isn't it?

And rushed to the hospital? Shouldn't she have been in a hospital already?

No..not all surgeries/procedures require a hospital visit.

My fiance is an RN and was telling me about an incident recently where a surgery patient neglected to tell them about an allergy he had.
So after administering something (don't remember what it was) he began to drop pulse and went straight-line and turned wax-faced.
They IV'd him quickly and brought him back. She told him later about it and he said, "Oh, really? Hmm."
Get this - patient was an MD.
.
She said he was officially dead for a period and that it happens now & then - no big deal if caught quickly.
I was slacked-jawed as she calmly told me the story.

A friend once told me he thinks medical students often choose a specialty based on their people skills and/or their empathy with patients. Thus, many go into family practice while other choose anesthesiology. For the latter, perhaps there's a correlation between the level of interaction they can manage with surgical patients and how deeply they're sedated. Propofol anyone?

I can see how someone might think this way. However, for those that wonder about such things, please consider that many anesthetics are not general anesthetics...which is to say that the patient may be fully awake and without pain for their procedure...which leaves the patient and their anesthetist to interact while they have surgery...and that this is the anesthetic they chose when presented with their options.

Further, consider that anesthesia folks have approximately 10 minutes (sometimes less) prior to patients' surgery to hammer out a plan that involves a complete stranger (or their neighbor in a small town) injecting medications in sufficient dosages to render them (or their children, spouses, parents...) senseless, completely defenseless and to more than competently manage whatever situation that may result. All while avoiding induction of unnecessary anxiety, delaying the surgery schedule or as a patient and family are experiencing a medical emergency.

Propofol is great stuff but a poor substitute for discretion...you could ask MJ and many others if they were still around.

Perhaps your friend would like to chime in here and tell us all about his mad people and medical skills.

He was most likely a lawyer, not a doctor.

Clearly I touched a nerve. Consider my story an attempt at occupational humor rather than a diss at a noble profession. Yes, I know. The difference between a doctor and an auto. tech is that docs can work on a running engine. Techs don't and can't.

A broader one is how to frustrate an engineer. One way is to ask him/her to refold a large paper road map (remember those?).

That's it for groaners
