How does Emtek compare to high end Schlage.

I've used Schlage and Baldwin in different applications and been happy with both.

Thinking of our next house.

So far Schlage seems to have a limited selection when it comes to styles. Most are pretty plain.

Emtak's fit and finish is about as good as Baldwin, Jado (not too popular out west), or any of the higher end locks. IMO, can't really compare it to Schlage in terms of finish. They are both good locks and use the same key way.

Door Knobs/Levers/Deadbolts suggestions?

Kwikset is junk. I prefer Schlage personally. Be careful buying through big box stores like HD or Lowes - they make lower quality (looser specs) specifically for sale in those stores. Get the mid-to-high grade stuff, the low end isn't all that good.

Haven't used Baldwin personally but I've heard good things.

Baldwin is good, if you get their better stuff. The security comes from the cylinder, which is why I reccomended Medeco. If you want the good stuff, skip the box stores and start with a good locksmith.

They can also help with all of the other stuff you need to secure a door.

You have a lock on your surfboard? What is this world coming to!?

I like Schlage also... maybe someday I will look into upgrading to Baldwin or higher end Schlage... but then I would have to upgrade the doors... and if I upgrade the doors as said I would have to upgrade the door frames... $lipery $lope!

So my wife and I have settled on Schalge Wakefield with Siena (oval) handles. I see them from door hardware online retailers, but Home Depot also carries them (on their website, not in stores).

The item/part numbers are the same at Home Depot vs. elsewhere but Home Depot is about $10 per knob less across the board. Are these the same hardware, or a cheapened HD version? Again the item/part numbers listed are the same. ?? Someone noted above that HD gets a stripped down version.??

We are finishing up a addition/renovation and recently bought almost 30 doors worth of Schlage knobs and deadbolts. My architect found an online vendor that was arount $150 less than the next closest. I have the vendor info on my work laptop. I'll look it up tomorrow.

I think with the same part numbers you're getting the same knob. We found our local Home Despot could not get the combos we wanted even with my contractor trying to custom order. IIRC we ended up with Georgan knobs and Addison backplates.

Have you tried a local building supply? I've been pleasantly suprised how competitive my local guys have been with custom orders. One custom built my entry door on site for $600 less than any big box store and another beat the best online price for a gas fireplace by over $500. J

Thanks JAR, that would help. I'm running into the same problem so far, most suppliers seem to have some of the handlesets but not all.

Yup, HD often not the same. We buy house knobs/locks from Locks, Hardware, Handles, Access Control | Taylor Security & Lock, have picked up a 'matching' one from HD and it comes with different backsets & hardware. The locking cylinders on HD deadbolts also have less pins.

Take a look at your local locksmith. Take apart a simple lock set and compare the same Schalge and you will see the differences. I am not sure what your Home Depot carries, if they can get top end Schalge cheaper, then great, but compare quality. We just installed a set for a client about a week ago (last thing that get install so no workmen will have the keys). We didn't even look at Home Depot and want straight to my regular locksmith and have them order the locks and keyed them all to the same key.
