My $500 Honda 350 Scrambler Restoration

Back in June I purchased the Scrambler from a guy for $500. It was in sad shape and only ran on one cylinder. However, all the parts were there, including the hard to find/expensive exhaust. I took it home with the plan to use as many used parts as I could to fix it up for a nice about town/forest road bike. Fortunately 98% of the parts are readily available both new and used and are fairly inexpensive. For example a new seat cover set me back all of $64.00; used gauges off of ebay: $34.00 shipped! I never planned for this to be a concourse restoration, but just a nice 5 footer. Total investment is $1200.00 (including purchase price). Here's the before:

Home on the trailer:

Yes it really has been sitting around since 1993!

The bike spent most of its life in Arizona and it shows:

No idea what happened to the gauges. Neither of them worked and had to be replaced. Wrong handle bars too.

This was a fun bike to work on. Nothing insurmountable. All work done by yours truly. By the way that paint job was done with off the shelf Acura paint color spray bomb! Total cost about $20.00!

Looks great! That reminded me of my Honda experience starting with Honda Trail 70 > Honda XL100 > Honda CB750F.

It really has some torque to it. I also have a '76 Honda 400SS which is a four cylinder. You really need to keep the revs up on it and also be shifting a lot. The Scrambler has enough grunt to just leave it in 4th most of the time.

I hear you; had a '76 KZ400 twin (before Kawasaki transitioned to 4 cylinders in 1980). Gobs of torque for such a small & relatively light bike.

The Honda CL350 is a collectable bike, but they made so many of them that the nicest one you could find wouldn't run you $2500! I like the new bikes, but why buy a new bike that is going to rapidly depreciate, when you can buy a classic for 20% of new?

Kurt - Great job....You are right, they are hard to find now....A dime a dozen in the Mid/Late 70's....I had one thru most of college.....On the freeway at 70, it was spinning at 7,000 rpm.....Broke a piston at 29,000 miles.....New ones were like 8 bux each and I rode it a few more years......Enjoy.....

Very nice! - that part(s) I dig are: great find, rough but all there. You did everything yourself including paint (which passes for OE quality and colors in the picture) and you did it all yourself..............did I mention that already?

I had a scrambler like that (silver) in college and I'm constantly looking for a deal like that. Love that bike.

Looks great Kurt, I learned to ride on a green one in '72.
Any chance it will be near Potosi the weekend of the 10th?
