When I was living in NYC, the best pizza I ever had was at the corner of 37th and 8th. It was a corner with a window. You walked up to the window and gave someone $1.50 and they gave you a slice of cheese and you ate it with everyone else standing around. Finished, you'd get another. $2 for pepperoni. That was it, a pizza oven and a window. Super thin crispy crust, fresh sauce, real cheese. Perfect. It's gone now and some f'ing knickknack chain has taken over the whole corner.

now I'm hungry.

Lombardi's or Grimaldi's- and there's NO Original Ray's!!!

You need to watch this, especially the end:

I'd look for one with Mob connections.

The pizza would have to be good otherwise they'd get "clipped".

I was there in August. We had a couple of slices at a place on West 7th around 23rd. on the north side. They had thin crust, thick crust, calzone ,and deep dish slices. The slices were good.
We also went to Grimaldi's in Brooklyn (by the bridge). There are 2 places side by side. We went to the single story one (not the original). It got pretty busy after 7.

I like Patsy's in East Harlem, very thin crust. Or my personal fav, Europa on W6th St & 20th Ave in Brooklyn. 6423 20th Avenue or one could go to Coney Island and get Totonno's Pizzeria Napolitana 1524 Neptune Avenue Brooklyn, NY 11224.

Best (http://best.piz.za.com) on Havemeyer between N7th & 8th Sts in Williamsburg is great as well as Pauly Gee's Greenpoint Ave between West & Franklin Sts in Greenpoint as well. Plus they are a quick L train trip into one of the most up and coming tourist destinations in the city.

I'm not a fan of L&B Spumoni Garden on 86th St in Brooklyn, I get the ****zz from their sauce.

Manhattan ain't New York,.....Brooklyn is....Owhhhhhhh!

Why would you want to drain off the excess oil?

I never understood the L&B hype. It's OK, but there are a few places right down the block on 86th st that are just as good, if not better.

Funny, Sbarro's started as a neighborhood salumeria on 65th St & 16th Ave in Brooklyn, not serving pizza. I past it every Sat when my dad would go to Bensonhurst to help out in his cousin Joey's pastry shop on 13th Ave. I used to drool looking at the provolone, salami, mortadella and sopressata hanging in the window.

OP said he's looking for pizza in Midtown. . . so that rules out hauling down to Arturo's or over the Brooklyn Bridge to Grimaldi's.

So. . . go to Angelo's at 117 West 57th Street, just west of 6th. And incidentially a 5 minute walk around the corner from Carnegie Deli.

Be safe have fun

Yes, we'll be too busy to traipse all over New York for pizza. I'll be entertaining an 11 year old and a 13 year old, they'd probably be happy with Domino's. I want to show them the world is bigger and things are very different than in their little Massachusetts town and the native pizza is just a small part of that.

John's on Bleeker in the West Village. Trust me on this. Like no other. Coal fired pizza with cracker crust. Really good.

Thanks, OC. It's funny, I've lurked so long here it didn't dawn on me that my first post on Pelican would be about pizza! I've got a Cayenne turbo and have posted an bit on the other P-car forums which have more Cayenne owners. But I come here to drool over the 911 and 930 forums. And I like the non-PARF off topic posts -- lots of interesting people / discussions.

I lived in NYC for 2 years, and while I still get back often for work, I don't get over to John's enough. It really is good pizza. I miss it. Not sure how no one has managed to copy/franchise it. Seems like it would be a huge hit.

About a month ago we stopped by for the first time and this 'hole-in-the-wall' place had the BEST pizza my wife and I have ever tasted. We have ordered there on two more occasions and attempted to get a supreme pizza this evening only to discover that Joe's Pizza was closed (apparently for the holidays). Our taste for pizza has changed dramatically since partaking in this delicacy. Joe's rules!!!... at least in our neck of the woods (just outside of Huntsville, AL).
