That is awesome, I would love to see it in person. I also have a knack of dragging my family to every aviation museum that we come across. The wife tolerates me well.

I'm no aviation aficionado but I've visited the museum twice and always recommended it as must see for people such as ourselves. The SG is definitely the party piece but there is all kinds of cool stuff SR71, Spitfire, B-17....etc. Those unbelievable air cooled engines on the SG should get any Porsche enthusiast going. It would be a real shame if the museum had to close it's doors.

Hard to imagine anything worse than four R4360's that were installed on the Douglas C124. "one turning, one burning, one choking, one smoking" ,was not far from the truth. But eight of em ................Good lord ! No wonder it flew only once. More than one 4360 gave birth to a bucket of bolts during my tenure as a flight engineer on "old shakey"

Four rows of seven cylinders: 28 cylinders per engine, times two spark plugs for each cylinder.
56 spark plugs, times eight engines. Spruce Goose uses 448 spark plugs! |

Yea, and back in the day.... a mass electrode plug cost about $ 5.00 ea. A "fine" wire AC 281 was more. That was late 1960 prices. Take that x 448 plugs ! But hey, 115/145 octane gasoline was cheap.

I was told once that those engines had to be torn down and rebuilt every 500 hours. Any truth to that?
Regarding "one burning", I thought that was a reference to their use as pusher engines on the B36 and not getting the required air cooling. Did they burn in regular usage too?

Don't know anything about the B36 but makes sense the thing would want to run hot. Had a couple of engine fires with the 4360. One was induction system (not advanced) fire. Scary! One accessory section fire from a failed generator . There were others. But in most cases in my experiences, the engine would just sheet itself anytime it felt a need and that was often. I was never a big Wright engine fan. The Wright R1820 however, is one of the best.
