Backcountry Coffee

I'm planning on taking a few Bikepacking (backpacking with a mountain bike) trips this year. Backpacked a lot when I was younger but it's been quite some time since I've done anything other than car camping. I used to use the Foldger's single serve coffee bags but would like something that I can make some good coffee in that's light weight and packable.

I know there are some campers & hunters on here so hit me with your favorite coffee method.

Jeff, I have a French press setup for my jet boil stove. You are welcome to borrow it to try it out if you'd like!

Starbucks via. Not the best, not the worst. But works every time with just hot water.

I am an ultralight packer though.

Me too. It's a little one cup sized one that you just refill and refill.

French press was my first thought, but mine is glass and I don't think that would be a good idea on a mountain bike.
What material is yours?

I like the light weight and simplicity of the Starbucks via, just don't like starbucks. But any coffee is better than the alternative.

Sid, I may take you up on that. Or we could grab Lee and give it a field test. He doesn't drink coffee, but I know he rides & camps.

Why back in my day we just put some grounds in a old sock and boiled it in a metal coffee pot on the fire for a while and drank the coffee and it was good! It did really stain the sock however.

Mine is glass but I stuff it with the plastic bag of ground coffee and wrap it in something to avoid sharp knocks.

yep, the Jet Boil is very good. But since a french press can be messy if you don't have a good amount of water for cleanup, you might still want to use coffee filter packs.

rusnak, Thanks for the pic & good point about clean up. In AZ, you don't run across many water sources.

Nota, The ultimate Cowboy coffee. It would work in a pinch.

Melitta filter cone is light and makes good coffee. Stupid cheap and unbreakable too.

The Jet Boil will heat your water up very fast - much faster than a camp stove. I would use a Melita cone funnel that is designed for paper filters, and just brew one cup at a time with it.

Portable espresso machine, car and travel espresso maker - Handpresso

This version uses ESE pods which are convenient. We've taken it riding with a couple of plastic espresso cups, 4-6 pods. As long as you can get boiling water, you're good to go.

I have this Snow Peak titanium stove, french press, and mug (with lid).
Super light and plenty durable.
I must confess to using Via more often than not these days, because it's so easy and pretty decent.

IMO the SB Via instant has a funky after taste, much like the flavored coffee creamers (hate those). Still due to convenience I would go with the Via packets.

I don't use much water rinsing out the jetbboil. Scrape out as much of the grounds as you can first and you can swish the water around and get the rest out pretty easily.

Yeah, pretty easy to clean out the french press, especially since you're using a coarse grind.

Yeah, if you have to carry your own water, then you don't want to waste it rinsing out coffee diarrhea.
