Billy: Hey man. All we represent to them, man, is somebody needs a haircut.
George: Oh no. What you represent to them is freedom.
Billy: What the hell's wrong with freedom, man? That's what it's all about.
George: Oh yeah, that's right, that's what it's all about, all right. But talkin' about it and bein' it - that's two different things. I mean, it's real hard to be free when you are bought and sold in the marketplace. 'Course, don't ever tell anybody that they're not free 'cause then they're gonna get real busy killin' and maimin' to prove to you that they are. Oh yeah, they're gonna talk to you, and talk to you, and talk to you about individual freedom, but they see a free individual, it's gonna scare 'em

I don't need burning man, but might fit in.

I've created (going back to the early 1980's) a tiger striped Ford van, a zebra striped Geo Tracker and a razzle dazzle striped Chevy S-10.

My hovercraft, art and furniture projects might fit in to.

I just built a triangular dock out of mostly scrap wood that sits on one existing post in the water (other two legs on land) that is very stable.

To meet so many people of like-mind would be exhilarating I would think.

The idea of burning my creations is however a turn off, that is unless it was meant to be a combustible exhibit.

Always curious about this and I would have tried it in my younger days, but I doubt I would have fit in. I think that's a point to consider — who does fit in? Per the video, it seems like a pretty big cross section of a segment of our society. Those that would not, and wouldn't have due to a closed mind, are evidenced right here on this minuscule commentary.

I see the overall mentality as that of the Coachella thing. Not the same focus but the same draw. I would have said Woodstock but I don't think attendees knew what they were getting into and there weren't sequels to refine it. Another point.

I think there's a allure to finding a release mechanism to the constraint of the daily grind. Some get drunk and others go fly fishing.

Burning Man seems to be now a little contrived and the people in the video lean that way. Part of it is how elaborate the overall structure is. I mean there are tons of building materials involved at considerable expense. Looks to be the typical assemblage of doers and lookers.

And that, in general, is how things are everywhere, every day. These people are just pulling back for a day or three and stripping (no pun) themselves, sometimes falsely, of some inhibition. To that I say hooray.

I work with a bunch of "Burners", very artistic, creative people. They plan and build months before the festival, take off and have a good time.

That's their thing, good for them. I'm not into camping in tents in a dirty environment, no access to showers, limited toilet facilities. I was in the Army, been there done that.

There's also the sexuality factor. They go and do the "free love" thing, smoke weed, take hallucinogenics. The majority of them are Gay (not that there is anything wrong with that). Like i said, not my crowd.

I think you'd fit right in, too.

I've never been, but know some people. Would like to go but not sure if it is worth the hassle, expense and discomfort. Probably is. One fellow I know who goes every year with his wife is an airline pilot. He passes drug tests using a very clever method. He doesn't use drugs of any kind. If you met him, you'd think he was career military.

BM is a bunch of unbridled zany-ness. People doing whatever they want while not hurting anyone.

The personal attacks in this thread, and in PARF, do not make you seem smart.

I think the purpose of Burning Man is achieve pure joy within a community of others.

It's got to be like rowing. I used to row and then coached crew for several years. There's a phenomenon called run in rowing. It's the state achieved when all rowers in the boat act as one, in perfect unison, and the boat rises up out of the water and you go faster and easier, than the level of strength you put in. It's scary the first time, euphoric every (rare) time thereafter.

The gifting economy/culture is what I'm eager to experience. Have to figure out what I could cook for masses. I'm thinking 10 unique fried chicken sandwiches from around the world but there's got to be something better.

I remember as a kid when the circus came to town. It was a very large production, but when the show was over, the strike team cleaned up the mess and you could never tell it had even happened.

The side show and big top no longer come to town. The last Barnum and Bailey show is over. If you want to see the freak show it is out in the desert.
