I'm going through this myself. My old one is literally falling apart at the seams. I part in a carport, no direct sun, really no rain, but cats and dust.

I think I am going to go with this. CoverKing Triguard. I'd include the Pelican catalog link, but you have to go through a wizard to get to it and I don't think you can paste the final link. I believe my old one is the same or at least very similar. Not thin, but easy to deal with. I just have to check with Pelican in person, as I added a ducktail recently and want to know how to go about getting a cover that works with it.

Our host is currently running a Promo on Coverking. I have not used this brand, but I am considering it.

Coverking Special Offer!

Dave has the right idea. The super expensive ones are thick and waterproof, you don't need any of that. Just something with a soft interior that won't scratch your paint.

I've bought a couple Dustop covers. They are nice and thick and offer good protection IMO.

Coverking is dead to me. The elastic on mine died after less than 6 months.

My coverking literally turned into dust. That's awesome - you put your cover on your car and and it ends up dustier than just sitting in the garage... Granted it's a few years old but practically always used inside.

For indoors: I have a 100% cotton flannel cover custom fitted for the car: two mirrors and Carrera tail. It breathes so it doesn't hold moisture in but keeps bugs, dust, etc off. Be careful putting the cover on and off. Dirt will cause scratches. The best way to take one on & off is to roll it up rather than drag it across the car.

*The custom fit really makes a difference: no big gaps to let dust in. I've had a generic for a 380sl and it never sat right.

Start with a cotton flannel cover and then cover with a waterproof cover. The cotton allows fine dirt particles to sift through them and then they should be washed before use again.
The waterproof cover should be rinsed off before removal.

+1, I've got a dustop from the PO. Its 23 years old, elastic still works well and shows no age.

I wash it on "gentle" once a year without fabric softner, its all good.

Breathability is all important when selecting a car cover. This not tested by blowing through the fabric to see if you can feel the flow through the cover. It is actually a measure of the moisture vapour transfer rate.A Cover manufacturer should have the data,if not don't buy from them.

I think I may still have a Coverking that I used for my '87 coupe. If you want it, let me know and I'll get it out of storage. It's yours for free. I'm in the Bay Area too.

I've been using CoverKing covers for many years,15-20 years. No problems, ever !
One trick I've come up with is I spray Scotchguard on it right when I get it,helps last longer
They do wear out. Another trick, I use a cheap Wal-Mart car cover over the CoverKing cover
that helps alot !! I got a cat who likes to sleep on the tail of the car.

Quoted for emphasis.

That said, for long term storage, I've used the stretchy, form fitting, ultra-soft covers.
Just be sure to vacuum the dust off them before removal or it will transfer to the clean "inside" of the cover and cause scratches next time.
