Standard light sport aircraft (SLSA) aircraft are factory built, turn key, aircraft built in accordance with ASTM standards and are required to the maintained in accordance with these standards. [....] Experimental light sport aircraft (ELSA), like amateur built aircraft do not have restrictions to who performs maintenance, repair, or modification. Maintenance, repair, and even modifications can be performed by anyone regardless of whether or not they hold an FAA certificate of any kind. The catch, though, is that a Piper J-3 can be flown with a LSA pilot license, but it is NOT an LSA plane - so it must still have maintenance done an A&P to FAA standards. I have seen discussions on the interwebz from people who do not understand that important bit of info. You must know what the plane is certificated as; Standard, SLSA, ELSA, Experimental, etc... and maintain it accordingly.

Got it...thanks
It seems odd that experimental aircraft appear to have more relaxed maintenance requirements including who can work on them, than commercially produced aircraft. Stands to reason that to save money long term, it might be worthwhile to build your own?

Well...it depends. Number one- your construction skills ,blue print skills. Next- Most are hard to sell in the end.... Right now you can buy a lot of certified real airplane for 20G. Thats a steal!Something to consider . Buy one with 500 hours left TBO engine and a annual .(or reach a agreement) Next A home built will always be a home built. Some carry zero for resale value. Some are way EZ to build , others never get done. Most have a POS for a engine. Some fly well, others do not. Its not a task to take lightly as the out pour of time and money can be staggering .( plus your life ) Choose wisely . I am NOT knocking home builds . Make sure you go to Oshkosh at least once . Some are dreams, others are the nightmares. These might be a good deal- Make sure all ADs are current (does not say if annual is current) (read contingency of sale.)

He is not close and I do not think he would be less expensive.
Hopefully I'll have my plane back tomorrow. the shop said they hope to have everything done by then, said if not it should be ready Monday. Unless of coarse something turns up and they have to order parts. They are a Cirrus Service center and they stock quite a bit of the normal stuff. They had a 2015 sr22T there with a carbon fiber option. The mechanic said that was a $14,000 extra. But I guess if your already up around 800k for a 4 seater, what's a few extra bucks.

Picked up the plane today, no big suprises. I had a piece of engine baffling that was cracked, so they replaced it all. A few fasteners were replaced. As were a couple of filters.
$2,775 That also included the corrosion X treatment and oil change. I was hoping that it would be under $2,500, but the baffling was $300. Thank goodness they didn't find any problems. Now I need to put a bunch of hours on the plane to get my cost per hour down.
