He may have had a plan in his head when he was on track but his entire team knew it was the wrong plan.
On lap 16, Rossi was leading and Smith and Redding were 19th and 18th. Smith never changed to wets, he was still on slicks. Redding had changed and then changed back. They started rocketing up through the order, gaining 3, 4, 5 positions a lap. Rossi stayed out until lap 21 and fell to fifth, where he stayed. Believe me, the team saw this coming... Vale was focused on a gamble, with respect to Marquez and Lorenzo. Had they changed too early, he would have been right. Turns out he was wrong and the team knew that 4 laps prior... JR |

To me, it looked like Rossi went on a tear to put some distance between himself and Lorenzo, so he had some buffer when he finally pitted to switch bikes. However, it seemed he played this game, 3 laps too long.
Rossi had to know that he'd be unable to complete the race on wet weather tires!

Might have worked, too, if the slicks hadn't been 10 or 11 seconds a lap faster at that point.

Said Rossi:
"I know that if you pit earlier it is better for the result, but more risky. Two laps before I wanted to stop but it was still raining a little on the back straight and I thought if I stop and it starts to rain more, for me the result would be very bad. Also I check a little bit and Jorge was still behind me, so I decide to continue. I stayed out a little bit too much and I lost time during the next two laps." The writing was on the wall for the race leaders when eventual winner Marquez began lapping ten-seconds quicker than the Yamahas. Lorenzo duly pitted next time around, but Rossi stayed out for yet another lap, leaving him in danger of being overtaken by Lorenzo. |

Yes!!! Very happy to see Smith and Redding get some podium time!!!! Would love to have seen a podium completely void of "the usual suspects", but Marc really earned it with that strategy!

Considering Smith went the entire race on slicks and was down in 21st position at one point, I'd say he had a good day.
If it had stayed wet, Vale would have won another race. JR |

Just got done watching the open practice...Lorenzo looks strong!!! I am thinking a 3rd place finish for Rossi.

NO SPOILERS, but when the Aragon race is over, I'd like us to have a discussion on Marc Marquez. I'd like to hear what the more experienced users/riders here think is going on with him? Pushing too hard? Riding beyond his own limits? Lack of patience?

Marquez is clearly talented. Perhaps the pressure of repeating is getting to him. Did you see how Lorenzo baited him with a very hot lap 2 time. He should mature and be more patient. Hopefully before he psychs himself out of it.
Battle for 2nd was epic. They hit 215 mph. Hard on the brakes for a 90-100 mph sweeper with a late apex. In awe.... |
