You and the missus did well preparing him fort life Captain, but you already knew that.

BTW, it is not the eye patch they are digging. That just makes them notice him faster.

He is a very nice and humble guy, as well. I met him 9 years ago when he was 13, (has it really been that long?!), and most recently saw him last summer before his accident. What I like about Jack is that he is very much his father's son but also his own man all the way.

I was lucky enough to meet Paul's dad once and it was exactly the same thing; another impressive guy and apparently a large shadow to grow up under but Paul is also his own man. Not really like his dad other than some of the same good qualities, IMO.

This is something I notice in men, I've known lots of guys who could not get past living in the shadow of their old man. I moved cross-country when I was very young to get away from mine and be my own person. Paul is humble and low-key around here but he's had a tremendous career as a Navy officer and pilot and is now just crushing it in the private sector. Some sons would not do well around that but Jack has that "raised by wolves" self-assurance and confidence that as a father you just pray your kids are going to have.

For guys like that, small setbacks like losing an eye or a limb do not even slow them down. They laugh at adversity and wear the scars proudly. One of my dad's closest friends, (and my great friend), is a 93 y.o. WW2 Army infantry vet, (MRM knows him), he has a dent in his forehead from either a bullet or some other battle injury, I swear it just makes him more handsome. Talk about a guy who's gone through life smiling.

Update

Graduation was great. He is spending two weeks in Alaska with a classmate who is from there. The pic is from yesterday. They get in a bush plane headed somewhere tomorrow.

I am soo jealous.

He is has been accepted at UVA for Law School but is going to take year off and work here on the farm. He also has a job with a defense contractor.

My boy. Happy Father's Day to all.

Jack Tell

Jack has been practicing for bow season. Check out the William Tell action from 30 yards:

I, of course, told him he missed twice

Update.

So, a few years later Jack is finishing his second year of law school. He was Army ROTC at VMI but the eye accident ended that path after his junior year. Others paths open. He is doing well.

He left Taekwondo for Jujitsu for all the obvious reasons. He was a BB in T and just earned his GB in Jujitsu. He has fought in two tournaments...they love him. He is a bit of a freak physically in terms of strength to weight.

The law degree is penultimate but he can't forget the path he was on...so he challenges himself.
