Actually, goes way back to when the 996s 1st came out, I wrote a "Ford Secretly Bought Porsche" thread on the old Porsche List, noting how the 996 got the dash from a Mercury Cougar, wheels & Mirrors from a Ford Probe GT and door handles from another Ford, posted pix that seemingly backed it up. People were asking me were I got this inside info, as it made sense since the 996s snelled of plastic & looked cheap compared to the 80s 911s, when I told them it came out of my head .

More comfortable than the '72 911S
I figured if I was going to buy a water cooled car, I'd buy one that was always water cooled.

![]() ![]() ![]() The dash on the 996 was pretty awful, even Porsche realized it a little too late. The rest of the interior, (seats/doors/etc.), was ok. They really suffer when they have a light interior, it just shines a klieg light on the ugly. In black or dark grey, (not light grey!), the whole $8.00 plastic piece in the middle of dash and $.50 buttons are muted quite a bit. Ironically, the 996 interior holds up to age and abuse a lot better than the earlier cars. It's as though it really was sub'ed out to Toyota except that Toyoya interiors exude a lot more quality.

Agreed. The dash does not lend itself to light colors. The interior of the 996 NEEDS to be totally black - as mine is. Full leather option, with Alcantara headliner also helps a lot (which I also have).

I agree Scott, mine is a very dark blue almost black with a few of the pieces painted silver to match the exrerior. I also have the Alcantra headliner, the interior doesn't bother me. Of course my previous DD was a fox body mustang, so it is a lot nicer.

Oh...right. That's a fair representation of the car.

Don't worry, eventually the circle jerk will end. My theory is that they're all jealous of another 911 that will provide significantly better performance, better comfort, working A/C and cruise, and for half the price.

Our minivan does most of those things. It's not just about numbers.

I seem to like the not so loved cars.... Oh well, the 964 was a good investment.

I thought the interior in my 86 was terrible quality wise...on par with what the US domestics were offering. Yes...that's bad!

Mine too... kinda took the fun out of it though, when it became an asset instead of a toy. I honestly wish my Porsches had gone down in value so it could've been more feasible to keep them. Hopefully I can hold on to my SC
