electric kitchen range burner question
Yesterday my wife noticed that the main large burner on our kitchen range didn't seem to be working correctly. What she noticed is when the temp setting was set on low that the burner was very hot. Does this sound like the burner going bad or the temp control ? Can I take one of the other burners even though they are different size and plug into where the bad burner is to see if it is the burner that is bad ? I'm trying to figure out how to trouble shoot the issue.

It sounds like the controller. Range elements are just a resistive load - a curly wire inside the metal casing. When they go south, they usually blow a hole. If you have a multimeter, you can easily check the element.

We popped out the suspect element and replaced it with the other element that is the same size and it worked. So we took the suspect element and placed it in the spot we just removed the other element from...........both elements working properly ! Electron voodoo ? We'll see if the self healing lasts.

It's a good idea to get them red hot once in a while to burn off oil splatter.
I once saw several burners disintegrate into a giant fountain of molten sparks across the kitchen. Not good.
