I can deal with the rain (I think?), but the dark sky for days on end will just kill me. By the 3rd dark cloudy day, with or without rain here, I long for the sun. The most beautiful days are days after a big rain storm. Those aare perfect bike riding days.

Different strokes..... Been in sunny cal since March and can't wait to get back to the nw. The long stretches of rain can get old but better than ground hog days in SoCal The black "dust" on my car is a reminder of the air I'm breathing. At least the rain and wind clears the air out. We're outside less here than we ever were in the nw due to the heat. Hope to get back to the rain next year as early as possible.

It really sucks here. I saw a pair of Bald Eagles this morning and there will be some good Cascade Powder to ski tomorrow morning.

I came to Seattle in 1987 (after 10 years in Iowa (grad school, etc.)). Haven't regretted the decision yet.

Yep, gets a little juicy in the winter or dry in the summer. But none of the extremes of Iowa & nearby states. May have traded tornados for earthquakes.

When it gets too dark, relatively cheap flights can get you to San Diego or Las Vegas for a break.

Visited Phoenix one August. Was talking about the heat to the airport shuttle driver who had come there from Alaska.

He noted that every part of the country has about 4 months of "bad" weather (too hot, too cold, too something). You just decide what kind of bad weather you can personally tolerate the best.

Seemed like good insight.

I'll take California "bad" weather every time...especially Southern California "bad" but Central Coast and Northern California "bad" are fine too. Heck, California "bad" is better than some places "good"!!

Then there is Honolulu.....

I've lived in the PNW all my life....born & raised in Seattle. Moved to the Portland area in 75 and don't regret it....much more sun down this way. But,the weather in Nov thru Feb grinds on me.... provoking a whine or 2.

A couple weeks of the grays + rain will do it every time.

Noah died 350 years after the flood, at the age of 950.

That'd make JP look downright young in comparison. Just sayin.

Yep not sure this move to the mainland after 40 + years in the islands is going to be easy to make long term
I've got a very narrow comfort range as far as weather goes.
And also a light budget.
That plus a desire for low density living area rule out SoCal.
Even central and northern Cal are still not inexpensive areas to live in.

Oregon and Washington offer better cost of living and beautiful country.
Nice relaxed people. I like it in so many ways.

This southwest desert is getting to me too.

I could migrate with the seasons for good weather. But I'd like to find a place for a base camp and to settle when needed.

The quest continues.

Yep, went out for a bike 2 hour bike ride with 75 degree weather at 4 yesterday. Came back in the dark, and it wasn't all that bad in shorts and tee shirts. Ate after the ride with a couple friends at an outdoor cafe.

Richard, are you living out of your motorhome in AZ then return to Hawaii during the summer?

One of the things that makes me like the PNW is when I go to other places that don't have rain. Often, there is a distinct lack of the color green. Brown, tan, yellow, sage and grey. The only places that are truly green are coniferous forest or places where water is moved from elsewhere to make the plantings survive. I like Hawaii, for sure, because when it rains, it gets it over with and then it gets sunny again. In the PNW, the grey days last for weeks sometimes. And it can be a cold, windy rainy season, which can get old. But I can look around and see green - green everywhere. And that makes the grey days worth it. And in the summertime, when everything is green, and it's 82 degrees with a light breeze, it's hard to think of a better place to be.

Well Ayles, at least you got a pic of that blue sky yesterday. I'm mostly watching the weather on the west side of the sound, and it doesn't look good for a while.
Just got a email from a friend on Whidbey Island. Claims he's thinking of putting in a line from his house out to the shop to keep from being blown away on the slog out to the shop. :-)

Look 171, yes I am living in the stream most of the last two years. Since an unexpected divorce.
I had been looking for an airstream motorhome for a couple of years before that for family adventures. So went ahead and got this one for a place to hang my hat while forging a new plan.
Came to Az to help my sister with caring for Mom. Sis was near the end of her rope after years of having mom living with her. That situation has evolved with mom needing to go into a care home this last spring.

I've been back to Hawaii a few time as family needs called for. Heading that way shortly for six weeks or so.
As for summers this last one I spent exploring the west coast up as far as the border with Canada. Then looped thru Colorado on the way back to Az.

So my time in the PNW was during a very dry summer. And I loved it. Now just trying to get the picture of what the rest of the year is like.

For 10 years of my career, I rode a motorcycle for a living 40 hrs a week.....Best job in the world July, Aug and Sept.....Worst job in the world Nov/Dec, especially the 3 P to 11:30 shift.......I once counted it rained 31 days in a row....Often go a whole month w/o a sunny day...

I kept track of the rain stats and could tell you any given day the annual rainfall to within a tenth of an inch......

Ah. So that's part of how you have racked up so many miles on the saddle Bob.

I doubt that many places in Washington get much more rain than I'm used to on the N shore of Kauai. It's about temps, and long periods with short cloudy days etc.

I'll just have to spend more time up your way to feel it out for myself.

That Tiki bar in Princeville I told you we had lunch at - They ran my credit card twice....Worked it out, but not happy with them....Also, when you are back, a member from out Vintage MC club moved and now works at the hardware store in Princeville....Don Armstrong....Enjoy your trip back this winter...
