Retracing My Fathers Steps...
So I came up with an idea to take a trip with my Son for a graduation present...retrace my Dads travel from bootcamp in San Antonio to where he fought during the Battle of the Bulge.
Problem is, he is 92 years old and doesn't really remember all the details. I know about when he served and with the 86th Blackhawk, the 88th Blue Devil and finished out with the 102nd Ozark of the 406 Infantry. I guess solders would transfer a lot back then? I know that during training he fell off a cliff and busted a leg, his division shipped out with him in a hospital and they all died. Then he and a bunch were redeployed for more fighting which is why he ended up with the 102. I know he earned a Bronze Star for something on or around Nov 20, 1944 and was injured during the BoB on or around mid Januray 1945. I also know he was in France, Belgium, England and Germany but I do not know the time frames or locations. I know his ASN number. Is there any way to pour through record to be able to know where he was and when? does the military keep such records?

Not sure about the answer to the question, but I think it's a great idea!
If you can't get to the Lackland side of the base, you can still drive around on the former Kelly AFB side. That part was shut down around 1997 and a few companies operate out of some of the old buildings. I haven't been there in 5 years but there were still a few old ones around at that point.

There are a lot of units that have webpages dedicated to their history and patrticipation in campaigns. Here's one for the 102nd....
Lone Sentry: History of the 102d Infantry Division USAR (102nd Unit History, WWI and WWII)
