Fram - bad.

What is a good brand of oil filter?
I have had good luck with Bosch or Mobile1 (free filter when you buy 5 quarts)

So you guys think I should cancel the engine swap I have scheduled at Walmart?

What is weird is that they are the ones who will have to remove the lugs and filters and drain bolts the next time. So, you'd think they'd learn fast.

Did you guys dealing with stuck oil filters try to remove when hot? I've noticed that gives much easier.

My new '12 Duc. Hyper had to have 3 Ducati oil filters in order to stop the weeping on my first dealer oil change.

Huh, I've never done an oil change when cold so I can't say.

They put RTV on the drainplug wtf? I guess they were going to make sure it didn't come back for the 3rd time

I dont particularly like the value propositon of changing oil myself but I don't trust these quicky type places for anything. I even bring wheels to they tire shop. The pita is worth not have to deal with a twisted off stud every now and then.

I am guilty of using fram filters sometimes on my pedestrian cars. Am I a terrible person. I sorta like the textured end so they can be unscrewed without tools.

They didn't want to invest in another drain plug washer so used the RTV instead.

In my case, it was warm but not hot when I tried to undo it.

I really am at a loss as to how they can get it so tight without any signs of damage from a wrench on the filter.

And that $14 oil change at the dealer is pretty good, I just wonder what kind of oil they're putting in at that price.

1990C4S - I forgot a key word in my post.... Washer....the rtv would keep it from dripping which most washers will do if used twice unless torqued really tight. DAHIK.

Me too. No issues.

The "Fram filters are junk and will grenade your motor" mantra seems to be one of those internet things that won't die--and it is always a "buddy", or "my uncle" or friend of a friend who had some catastrophic engine failure due to a Fram.

Besides--every time a hood of a 7-figure classic Ferrari is opened on any car-related TV show, there are Frams.

My problem has always been with the oil filters that have a rounded rubber gasket rather than the flat wide gasket for sealing against the block. You can't tighten these enough to make it stop leaking. A new crush washer on the drain plug costs virtually nothing, and saves on those driveway spots.

I have seen the burst cans from Fram.

I don't know if they still do, but they used to have a cardboard bypass that let the oil bypass the filter element.

Local auto parts store has a couple different brands of oil filters cut open so their internal construction can be seen.

No Fram for me- The insides are downright scary. The non-Porsches use Wix. Never had a problem with the threads.
