They (buyer) get to pick the place for the PPI (within reason), but you're the one to drive it over there to get it done. They pay for it, and subsequently get the report from the shop.

GLWTS.

BTW: what are the details of your car? Looks great from the photos, and you're reasonably mechanically-inclined.

So sorry you have to sell Vash. When looking at a Boxster the seller let me take it to an indy shop. The seller was an exec type and very trusting. My 99 Miata the dealer let me take it to the same indy shop to see if I thought it was okay to buy. My latest acquisition the 2013 Miata the dealer let me take it to an indy shop.

Now for me and I was selling I am not so trusting. I would take it to the indy shop of their choice and would wait while the PPI was done. The title is under my name still so if he wants to drive it while I am in it then fine. Otherwise no.

One tip if you don't sell it to me, make sure you dictate that you receive a copy of the PPI report. I've had to go back and question items on a PPI for cars that I am selling, the best is a dealer PPI noting light wheel cosmetic curbing as "severe structural damage". Ultimately the tech had to call the buyer to explain that they were a little carried away with their description......

Anyway... What's the story? Why are you selling the car? You better not be going AWOL on us if you sell it!

turning the page on a new chapter in life. i might be in an apartment for a bit, with no garage. i'm house shopping for a new house and i really dont want sell my old one. it's in a great location that is going up in value as San Francisco overflows. so i need to clear out some stuff and maybe even clear up some cash in the process. it's really a problem about storage space. i dont drive the car much. it only has sub 97,000 miles, maybe.

i'm a motor head, so i'll be in something different. always like vintage 4x4's..maybe a BMW 2002, or buy the Datsun 2000 i found in a barn.

and i'll stick around. where else will i find experts about vintage 4x4's, 2002's and Datsuns?

Another option... Find a friendly farmer in the country with cheap storage in a barn and leave it there for a few years. I regret selling certain vehicles over the years and I know if I ever was to sell the 911 it would be my big mistake.

When I sell a car, I know exactly what is right and what is wrong with it. I tell the buyer the same. If he takes it for a PPI, so what. The car is what it is. I don't sell junk. Every car I sold is better then when I bought it. I might be in the minority, I tell the truth.

As a serious buyer, usually from 'afar' - I'll Google shops closest to the seller, then starting with the absolute closest, then look for reviews for those shops. I try to make that process easy for the them.

I always though you were in the city of SF? Home pricing is going nowhere but up (I don't know exactly where you are?), so I am with you on this, hang on to it and rent it. I bet you will come out ahead. Can you rent the house to someone but keep the garage to store junk? I know lots of people do that when storage is an issue in the big cities. I bought my neighbor's home last year and my plan is to rent it but keep the garage for my 993 I bought a little over a year ago. My car has been sitting in this guy's shop for most of that time getting some "stuff" done. Thank goodness he's not a full time wrench so the price I pay to have things done is part of storage.

My vote is to keep the car. A old 4X is cheap compare to old 911s and that can be had anytime. I love old 4x4s too. Dang Widebody keep showing photos of his Umimog. I really, really want (insert that photo of the raccoon). Take your time looking for that new home. It will come.

If you ended up not selling to the current guy, an old client, set designer for Ellen DeGeneres show, is looking for a clean air cool 911. He's giving his 997 to his boy friend. He had a 77 Targa and like the older cars better.

Just a thought: There's BAT storage near one of the airports... There's more classic car storage in Marin (sausalito and san rafael - nice area for a drive anyway). Mind it's not cheap, $300/mo ! But super safe and a couple warehouses full of eye candy! Then again if you need the $, it's a great time to sell the SC !

2002s are a great idea. IMO, one of the last affordable fun cars out there, that has not jumped the price/fun chart (aircooled 911s have, sadly, IMO). I enjoy mine just as much as the 911T, possibly more because it's cheaper and people go crazy when they see it, which is amusing. Can't help with Datsuns. Let me know if you need details on warehouse or 2002...

I vote to take the money and buy a nice 240Z for $10k or so. Really fun cars that are still drivable by modern standards, and they have a good shot at some future appreciation. Throw in an FZJ80 for $7k and have plenty to spare on boring responsible stuff.

The best way to get the Land Rover itch out of your system is to own one.. I'll take another Land Cruiser.

When I sold my '81 SC, the buyer picked the shop for the PPI. Fortunately, it was close by, so no big deal. A few days after the shop gave it the OK, the guy agreed to buy the car, but wanted me to bring it back to the shop for a 2nd PPI to make sure I didn't swap out the motor in the mean time! I told him that wasn't gonna happen. He took the car anyway.

If you ever just need space to store it, I have space in a garage, free of charge, as long as I get to take it out every once in a while to keep things working.

After you negotiate the purchase price, just make sure you set a dollar amount for estimated cost of repairs that is allowable-

It's gonna come back with SOMETHING- I typically set it at $250.

Under $250, shut up and give me your money. Over $250 we'll talk about it.

I know a guy with a Defender and a 911. He'd say to himself how pleased I am to own my Land Rover every time I drive it. And it had its 4WD snowfall uses. But, he had too many Sundays feeling pressure to make up a reason to drive somewhere and keep things moving. It's sort of like a 911, in that way. It's very easy to just never use it. He sold the Defender and kept the 911.
