1970 Chevrolet Chevelle 454 on eBay

What do you guys think about this car?

My brother is the owner/seller.

Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 | eBay

This is a unmolested and unrestored SS 454 with the two build sheets and is ready for a new owner. If you want a clone or modified SS 454 Chevelle, this is not for you. This is a survivor not a restoration.
Look at the image of the build sheet to understand the options.
The car options match the build sheet, down to the Atlanta Monte Carlo Tach.swap. #938. A well documented factory substitute. This car runs and drives well. The brakes are fresh and stop good. New hoses, pads and shoes, master cylinder and wheel cylinders. I recored the radiator last year with a correct 4 core brass core, using the factory tanks with tags. $450 The 454 in it looks stock, but sounds like it has a larger cam. It is very strong. It was in the car when I bought it 14 years ago, so don't know what's in it. I built a number matching 454 that comes with the car. It's on an engine stand. It is 100% correct. Correct Cam lifters and springs from Crane Cams, Correct date code and model heads; Correct exhaust manifolds. Castings and date codes are correct. I decked the block and stamped the block with Vin number. I never installed it because the 454 in it looks and runs well. I will not install it, but it comes with the car. It comes with the original 8 track radio loose. I have no idea if it works, but looks great.. This car has a Fla title. It has a few minor issues. Gas level gauge started pegged high, prob from being a garage queen. The clock never worked. It does not have correct tires, battery or exhaust resonators. Car has a few small dents and dings from use. I have a folder with the receipts and other paper I have accumulated in 14 years.

I have no idea what the reserve is.....just curious what you think of the car and if you have a guess as to it's value.

Thanks!

Extremely rare (desirable?) option.

"Drive Type: FWD"

" I decked the block and stamped it with the vin number". Yea, so you have a unknown block to go in the car with a vin # YOU stamped on it. Talk about fraud. IMO, a car with the wrong motor. I've never, ever heard of the "atlanta monte carlo tach swap". on a build sheet in all my years. Why would anyone swap a tach for another, and it would not be on any build sheet.

Not sure of a good price, but sounds like a pretty amazing car. With the right buyer, and the craziness these days, I'm betting $50k and up.

It would probably depend upon finding the right owner. It's an LS5 car, not an LS6, so that would probably detract a bit, but still a phenomenal car. Besides, who wants to be screwing with the lifters/valves?

I'm guessing if the right folks see the ad, $40k-80k, but then I'm not up on that market.

Hmmm...well, I'm a bit pessimistic on this car. I vote $32k max.

Thanks for the input - will be interesting to see how the bidding goes.

Car looks to be pretty original, so it has that going for it.

Yeah Steve, that FWD I'm sure was a boo boo by my brother

My neighbor in CA had one - IIRC his was a 1970 and had a 396 rather than the 454. Still a real pavement pounder. He claimed he'd been made cash offers of $60k but this was also about 8-9 years ago (pre-crash, housing bubble days) so YMMV.

They are tanks and can be built to go pretty fast in a straight line, but have all the handling of your average oil drilling platform.

How do you build a numbers matching engine? What did that even mean?

AFAIK "numbers matching" simply means it's the original engine that shipped bolted to that chassis and body from the factory. It certainly can be removed and rebuilt / modded then put back in. The SNs would still match up with factory records. I don't think that's what's being described here - it could be described better as "fraud". The guy openly states that he stamped the block with a "correct" VIN. Probably illegal, certainly unethical and definitely odd.

I've never heard of restamping a block with the "correct" VIN, unless perhaps it was a new crate motor, but still, it was not original to the car, so it does seem to be a fraud.

Beautiful driver car that has my favorite color combo. I had virtually the same color combo on my 1970 Pontiac Lemans (gold/white/white) whaen I was a senior in high school.

Just an FYI: the stamped engine with correct matching numbers is factory correct and is not installed in the car.

It is a SPARE engine.

And fraud is when you fail to disclose something to someone - clearly not the case here.

Thanks for your other comments!

In my day with muscle cars, it was illegal in many states to have a VIN stamping tool set. Many people ground off the vin/serial number of a block to replace it as the "original" motor". Many unsuspecting buyers have cars today without a clue. One way to find out the original vin number is to do the acid test. The # will come up, but hard to see. The "stamped" engine above is not the original engine, and if put into the car would be, imo, fraud, if, if not told first.

Love those cars, I was brought home from the hospital when I was born in our 70 ss 396. We had that car up till my mid 20's when my dad lost it in bankruptcy court . Sucked.
My felon ex landlord cloned an ss chevelle exactly like that one, at least the colors and passed it off asa low mile original . It was 95', and I remember him letting me count the pile of cash , I think he got 33k for it . It was the most cash I had ever seen up till that point .
It just resurfaced on some muscle car forums and was found to be a fraud. He did a decent job of faking all the #'s and paper work for the times , but made a few mistakes . I got to see the whole build come together in his shop , it was interesting .
He faked engine #'s Vin #'s, build sheets, window sticker. He was a real scheister.

My buddy has a 1970 455 Cutlass SX that is that same color, big scoops that could inhale a seagull. He actually has all the documents, original pink slip, window sticker, build sheet, all that stuff. Not worth as much because it is an Olds, not a Chevy. It is nicer that a Chevelle to drive though.

I've owned & restored 23 1970 SS Chevelles. Some of you may remember my recent black LS5 documented car, so I have considerable experience with my opinion here. While the car is OK, it is not fairly represented. I see this crap all the time. When it comes time to visually document the car, the excuses start. The factory had a 'unique' style of engine pad stamping with alpha/numeric characters that are almost impossible to duplicate.

If the car came with a factory tach, there were only two options. I have never heard of this 'swap'. At the end of the day, its just another non LS5 / 6 car without its original engine
