Almost Banned Once

I saw the 3D version... Loved it! I plan on seeing the extreme screen 2D version before it goes off cinema.
Disney have really done the franchise a service. Well done!

Took the kids and we all thought it was an order of magnitude better than Force Awakens. Though the last couple scenes the 7 year old boy could see what was coming and stated loudly, "I hate Disney". I would give this one 3rd of all the SW movies and the writing was much better and it was corny enough to feel like the original movies. While I enjoy TV shows from Mr Abrams, his movies tend to have videography that sucks.

Exactly how I felt... Surprised they could not find a doppelganger... Even Ian Mc kellen might have pulled it off..They looked like wax characters. Still a great flick, visually stunning.

They did pretty well getting one for Mon Mothma and I think the did a CGI overlay for Leia because Carrie Fisher. Not sure why they didn't find a doppleganger for Tarkin.

The CGI can't be as bad as in "Force Awakens", doing Snoke as a kindly grandpa to the Vader kid, who looks like a spoiled Armenian millennial prince.

We were talking about that over Christmas. Kylo Ren is a "snowflake" and neither villain was intimidating as a villain. I was surprised the kid didn't fall on the ground banging his feet on the floor in a couple scenes. I guess he couldn't find his safe place.
The CGI to make Leia and Tarkin young was good, but a little off.

Too big to fail

We (my wife and I) saw it last night, and we both liked it. As far as the series goes, it basically sets up Episode IV, although they go to great lengths to beat that into your skull. But aside from that, there is very little that gets developed - just about everyone is disposable and disposed of in this movie.

What happened to all the stormtroopers being Maori, clones of Jango Fett, and tight blood brothers?
Millennium Falcon is now an Extra 300 as well as a SR-71, while still being called junk by everyone? 'Sometimes you feel like the force. Sometimes you don't.' Have we become a little 'creative' with our new little franchise..there..Disney? Last edited by john70t; 01-02-2017 at 04:37 PM.. |

Lots of folks making big bank in Hollywood. Can't someone come up with a new story set in space? We went to see Rogue 1 on Christmas day (not my choice). That will be the last time for me.

Saw it tonight with my son. Guess I'm burned out on SW. Went on too long and special effects were great but overall, I was glad when it was over. Have to agree with above, that cow has been milked nearly to death. I'm done.

Consider, though that many of the effects in this film could not have been done 10 years ago, and will be surpassed in another five. Last edited by DanielDudley; 01-03-2017 at 01:57 AM.. |

I saw it the day after opening.
I'm a pretty big Star Wars fan, taking into consideration that I am not a 'fan' usually of movies series... Star Wars is the exception. The original trilogy was huge for me a a kid, just mindblowing. And I saw all three prequels on their opening weekends when they came out. I wasn't as excited for those then than I was for these new movies now. Number 7 I enjoyed, although I thought the main plot device was dumb and it was too much of a rehash of Ep IV, I still enjoyed it. So I've got 30 years of being a fan going on here... and I was pretty jazzed up for Rogue One because it seemed like it was going to be the kind of Star Wars movie I'd always really wanted to see. So I had really high hopes.... And it went above and beyond all of them. The setup for me was great. I can see it being a bit slow in the beginning but it is a whole new cast and you have to get people acquainted with what would have been happening right prior to Episode IV. The last 30 minutes of the movie was the best 3rd act of any Star Wars film, period. Empire was always my #1... but I think this movie topped it. Yeah. Also.... the 'CGI' Grand Moff Tarkin and Leia..... to be honest, I saw it in 2D and maybe on not-the-nicest projection screen... I didn't notice Tarkin was a CG face. Neither did anyone in my 8-person group. We all thought they just found an actor that looked really really similar to Peter Cushing. And Leia... I thought maybe it was touched up a bit but honestly couldn't tell. Maybe on a bigger screen sitting closer, or in 3D IMAX... but for me the inclusion of those characters was absolutely needed and executed wonderfully. Not to spoil the ending but the entire time I kept wanting the movie to end exactly where it did with that exact shot.... I was thinking 'if they don't tie this in, they missed a huge opportunity...' and then with about 5 minutes to go I was literally jumping in my seat thinking 'they are going to do it... they are going to run the movie straight into it......' Perfect for me, and really made me feel nostalgic like seeing the beginning of IV like I was a kid again. And not nostalgic in a cheesy way like a lot of the callbacks in Force Awakens... but legit like 'this is so cool'. Anyways... that's my review. Go see it if you haven't.
