coworker says he's buying Alfa Giulia Quadrifoglio

https://www.alfaromeousa.com/cars/alfa-romeo-giulia-quadrifoglio

He says he wants it in blue with the same wheels that the car below has on it.

He called all of the dealers in town, and they all had one, but none would allow a test drive. He went to one that once they were away from the dealer, the salesman let him drive. He really liked it.

Apparently, you have to order it, but, there are requirements. One of the requirements is that you have to order it with the $300 car cover. OK, whatever. One of the other requirements that seems insane is that you have to order the $5500 carbon ceramic brake option. Before he went, he asked me something like "should I order the Brembo brake option?" I was thinking that I'd be surprised if the car, being the 505hp model, didn't come with Brembos. So, I asked him to show me what he meant. Yeah, he was asking about the Carbon Ceramics. The standard steel brakes are also Brembo. I showed him the difference in prices for a brake job for a 911 turbo with carbon vs steel for pads and rotors. He found something online that said that unless you're doing track days, you really don't need them. He also found something online that said that when they are cold that don't have the bite of the standard steels brakes, but that once you get them hot, which would be hard to do on the street, they work well, so he hard decided not to order them. Now the dealers are telling him that he doesn't have a choice. The other funny thing is that the model that he drove at the dealer had the steel brakes.

I tried to talk him into driving an AMG Merc, and an M BMW and another coworker even mentioned a CTS-V, I think. I don't think I even mentioned any Porsche. He didn't even want to bother driving them or looking at them because he sees them everywhere. I think a huge part of the appeal of the Alfa is that it'll be rare, and he'll stand out because of it. I don't think this guy will care as much how it feels to drive as I would. I suspect I could drive 3 or 4 cars in a particular class, and would find that my enjoyment of the driving experience might vary A LOT despite the cars having very similar performance figures. I like to have at least tried more options and know what the various options feel like.

I think he's out of his mind. I don't think he can really afford this car. He just bought his first house, and when he found his house, he also learned that he is about to become a father.

But, it's his money, and I should get to watch this all play out. Hopefully, I'll get a ride out of it.

Incredibly foolish in my book. Only the biggest car geeks are even going to know (or care) what he's driving. I honestly wouldn't look twice at the car. They look like a hopped up M3 that crapped its pants.

LOL imagine the conversations you could have with him where getting a Maserati or a Jaguar would burn less money. . . . HA!

I don't get the appeal. What are those wheels, like 17"?

He will definitely get a crash course in the "modern dealer service only" kind of car, that's for sure.

Jeremy Clarkson Loved it in Grand Tour. The engine for example ... He drove it quite a bit. Here is what he didn't like ...

Even if I liked this car, I would only buy it if money was of no concern, as you can be guaranteed resale to drop like a rock. Your pal doesn't sound like he is made of money, but let him go ahead and make some poor decisions, maybe he has more dough than you know ...

I like my Giulia. I think it'd give op one a run for its money.

Exactly! It's his money...no big deal. If he wants it I say go for it.

How many of you drive "crappy old Porsches"? Looking at it logically that's a bad decision as well.

Yeah, if I was in that market, and had to have something different, I think one of the Masers would be more my style. I'm not assuming that either will be reliable, but the sound of the Maser is going to be much better than the sound of the V-6 in the Alfa. I think he's enamored of a longish standard warranty. I'll be curious to see how that works out for him.

I think he's got money saved away. He's been making decent money for 12-15 years as a single guy. He's talked about how he doesn't understand how people go into debt. I think he's probably done some impressive saving for a younger guy. The problem in my head is more about the maintenance costs, but then I guess if it's new and under warranty for several years and a bunch of miles. His commute is only a few miles each way.

Yeah, we aren't that close, and he's strong headed. Myself and another coworker tried to persuade him otherwise.

Wow, yeah, that's HOT. Yours has much more character. If I had to buy a new Alfa, it would be a 4C, but then that's definitely not the market that he's in.

I think it looks pretty damn good, particularly based on the Clarkson review. Let's face it, the M3/M4 isn't exactly a Toyota in terms of reliability either. I am rooting for Alfa to succeed, another enthusiast make in the marketplace is a win for everyone.
