Both engines failed, yikes!
Glad injuries were not too severe.

Makes one wonder if it was a low fuel issue?

The pilot did a pretty good job of putting it down safely. Glad the slices from the prop in that Camry weren’t a little farther forward!
I’m betting either contaminated fuel or pilot error, a twin like that would have independent fuel systems such that one failure won’t take out both engines.

Odd that a failed engine with likely feathered props would slice the car up like that.

Most likely Pilot error. If they put the wrong fuel in, it would not have flown around so far as the data shows. To have two different engines fail it almost has to be no fuel. Maybe the selector switch for the tanks was in the wrong position, or the gauges were wrong. The pilot is supposed to know how much fuel is on board without using the gauges.
We always fill up after landing, so our airplane has a two full tanks, and ready to go on the next mission.

The reporter said they were on their way to cover another plane crash when they got held up in the traffic jam for this one.

So he endangered everyone else's life to perhaps save his own ?
That's kind of against everything we military people were ever taught...

Is this normal procedure to land on top of people to try and save your own ass?
Why not head for the airport? I can see a lawsuit in his future?

No need to feather the props if you can make it to a suitable lading area. Feathering the props on a dual engine failure would just help you glide further if needed. He was right over the highway so not needed.. That being said, I can almost guarantee that it didn't even cross his mind. You don't train for dual engine failures, only single, in which that procedure includes feathering the prop so the other working engine can sustain flight.

He was about 5 miles away from the airport, so he would not have made it. Pilots are trained that when an engine failure happens, to find a suitable landing spot ASAP. A highway is a much better landing spot than landing on a building or in the woods, etc. Maybe landing on the side/service road would have been a better option but maybe not. It was dark and 90% of pilots would have picked the same spot and hope people see you and get out of the way. Basically hoping for the best. If he did run out of fuel, he could be charged with negligence/recklessness, etc., but if it was out of his control, probably no criminal charges, only civil.

As said, how does he lose both engines?
I will postulate pilot error.

With that viewpoint, it certainly looks like he could have held it in the air longer and give her enough time to pull away.

^^^ I agree....it almost looked like he was trying to make a 'roof-top' landing.
It'll be interesting when the report comes out. I'm betting no fuel.
