Don't wait for one day. Git'er done. You won't have any regrets by building one of those boats today. But you may have regrets by not. My 911 sat for sixteen years in pieces. I always had an excuse, some legit most not. I regret not doing a little here a little there to get it back together. Years I can not get back.

You want this.

$50,000? For fiberglass? Whew that's a lot of money!

I see the result of a very high level of detail and craftsmanship. You have to love what you're doing to go through that pain. Beautiful work.

My dad just gave my son (15) a small pile of very old woodworking tools. Now I guess we better go take a closer look at them...

Cheers

Nice! I have a couple of those wood moulding planes. Task specific, carpenters and cabinetmakers had chests full of them in all radii and widths. Looks like you’ve got a couple bead forming, cove cutting and rabbet cutting. The individual profile planes were replaced by multi planes like the Stanley 45’s, and then later made obsolete by electric routers, although there are a few things a plane can do that a router can’t.
I’ll pull out my 45 and snap some pics when I have a minute.

Very cool. I love molding planes. They look to be in really nice condition. Beautiful patina to the wood.

This thread came a few years too early to REALLY catch my attention. Great stuff!

Yeah the pic in your other thread shows a lot of old tools. You've been busy. I've lost interest in the old stuff. Just takes up space and I seldom ever use one. There are a couple that are very useful.

You shouldn't have to pay much for antique tools as most don't sell well. I have braces and bits coming out of my ears and in reality I could get 20 bucks for 10 lbs of the stuff.

Yeah, I think it's funny when I see stuff on eBay priced as if it's made of silver and gold.
Most regular braces are, like you said, practically sold by the pound. There are some that are more sought after by collectors these days. I suspect a ton of the old stuff these days gets thrown into the garbage "when grandad dies".

Stanley 2101 braces are considered one of the best, and those regularly sell for $50ish if they are in good shape, but most braces unless extra old and/or unusual are $5-10.

I've only started buying old woodworking stuff since 2022, I think, and I've seen prices of some things go up 2x, 3x, or more. It seems that because a few things are desired, now everything thinks they have something unique and valuable. If you have the time and desire to hit garage sales and go "pickin'" you can still, I think find lots of bargains where you get the old molding planes for $5/per. I think I'm getting a pretty good deal if I get wood molding planes for <$15. I usually pay $5-15, but think I have paid as high as $20. I've got higher for an old screw arm plow plane, but that's not a regular molding plane.

I saw this on FB. A guy restored an old French Pattern maker's vise.

What an awesome vise. I'd love to have one of the Emmert pattern maker's vises, but since those regularly go for $400+, unless I stumble across one going cheap, I'm not likely to get one.

That's a beautiful vise. I wonder how old it is? Being nitpicky, especially about other people's work and possessions I think oval head wood screws, carefully sized, fitted and clocked would be the icing on the cake.

It would be cool if they all got tight when clocked, but I assume he stopped when they were tight. I suspect you could fit some sort of thin washer-shim under the screws that would clock them.

I think flat headed slotted screws are older than oval headed slotted screws. Presumably these are the original screws.

I was also curious how old it is. If I stumble across the posting again, I'll see if I can find out.
