Suicides in Oregon probably up
TV weather news last night...the Willamette Valley has had exactly 9 days without rain since Jan. 1. Long ago, I read an article that mentioned suicides are higher during long stretches of gloomy weather. Weather today? The current usual...muted colors of gray and green. Gray sky, green plant material, muted as you look through the falling rain.
Hey, at least it's not the NE white out conditions. And, it is spring. The rain is warmer than it was a month ago.

Someone the other day mentioned that we've had 8 days without rain since Oct 1. I don't really want to look at the Seattle regional suicide trends...

Seasonal Affective Disorder.
It's a real thing, probably Vitamin D mediated.

Had a friend move up here from S. California. Asked him why in the hell would he do that.. His response was he wanted a change of scenery. I told myself he wouldn't make it a year and would leave because of the weather.
Sure enough almost nine months to the day he called and said they were moving to Arizona. Have had friends from Australia come and visit once during the winter. It was gray and rainy the whole time. They asked how in the hell could I live here and not kill myself.. Been here my whole lift and don't even really notice it anymore... |

Still, many of the "transplants" from sunnier climes do go bonkers. This year, even the natives are getting restless.

one time, visiting PDX, we hit a stretch of GREAT weather. even the mere mention of the great weather would generate a response like, "well dont get used to it..it isnt gonna last"
even good weather forced the people to remember the bad weather. it was interesting.

This winter in Seattle has been a rough one. Last year I was able to get my 911 out a few times but this year its been crap weather since October.
I feel pretty used to it (life long resident) but every few years a weather pattern will make you wonder why you live here.

I spent a week in Portland during June a few years ago. The weather was great.

Our summers can be fantastic but you never know what is going to happen. There was a stretch of years where it was really nice Monday through Friday, but would start raining late Friday evening and stop late Sunday night. Rinse and repeat for the entire summer.. then the next summer, and the next.. That's enough to make you go postal...
I tell people it is usually 9 months of rain and gray skies, followed 3 months of great weather "if" you're lucky. We had over 10 inches of rain if February alone. One day was just over two inches in 24 hours. |

I remember having a Tee shirt that said "Vancouver Rain Festival! September 1 - August 31"

That's what sucks in many. A visit in the summer to make them think they'd love living here. So they buy, only to regret it later. Especially along the coast, which suffers from even more rain & stormy weather than here in the valley. Always real estate for sale on the Oregon coast, some of it pretty nice homes.

Vitamin D fights SAD. I am a native. This is a tough winter. Worst is about now to June when it should be nice but it just sucks every day. I hope to go sailing Sunday. That would be good.
