If the homeowner happened to be in the area of his home in which he has his gun safe, it would have been no trouble to retrieve that rifle from the safe, insert a magazine, and investigate the noise. That is, of course, pure conjecture on my part until the police release the details of what happened. The same holds true for this little liberal wet dream of some deranged nutcase with "an AR in every room, one under the kitchen sink, etc."

We get it - you precious little snowflakes are scared motherless that average citizens are armed and willing and able to take matters into their own hands. You cannot fathom that regular guys would keep firearms as accessible and ready for action as your little pink pussy hats. So in your minds they are some kind of freaks - really scary freaks. Don't worry though, you are still free, when someone breaks into your home, to pull on that little hat, dial 911, and hide in your safe place. No one will stop you.
You really read a lot into a simple post sometimes, Higgins. Or maybe you are just spring-loaded for a fight when it comes to anything to do w guns, I don't know.

At any rate, I keep my guns loaded and ready to fire at home and I'm the furthest thing from a "snowflake" on this subject. BTW, you need to come up w some new insults for the perceived liberals invading your headspace. Those ones are getting played-out and you don't want to seem old or behind the times. Just trying to help.

If anyone ever broke into my home when I was home, it would really be the wrong home to break into. I'd do what was necessary and worry about the law later. I was just making a light hearted remark, as many others have here, about the situation. This guy was more than ready for them, that's all.

I actually do own a safe now. When the kids were young I did not. I guess growning up around guns myself I never thought much about it.

There is part of a gun (revolver frame) in my car - dunno why I've not taken it out yet, but it is just the frame, no cylinder, barrel, etc.

The only other gun I own that isn't in the safe is a $25 single shot 22 remington (mdl 41 IIRC) that is out in my workshop in case of animals in the back yard.

Back in the day (more than 25 years ago) I had a small collection. They were always locked up in an old bank safe I bought at auction. A gun safe was the norm in Aus.

Then a maniac massacred a bunch of people in Tasmania (35 killed and 23 wounded) & then the law changed and nothing I had was legal anymore. (all semi auto or pump/lever action)
Mass killings had happened before Tasmania but nowhere near as many at one time.

I handed them into the local Police station, they handed me a check and then cut them up in front of me.

We are lucky to have the 2nd Amendment to the constitution. We have the right to own guns. As many as we feel we need and can afford. One of my friends lives just outside the city. He set up a shooting range 15 steps from his front porch. I can go up there and blow holes in paper targets anytime I want. If we shoot his full automatic AR15 a deputy invariably roll up, looks at it and the paperwork then they usually want to shoot it.

There is a gun store and range a mile from my office. Anyone over 21 can go in and rent all sorts of full auto weapons. They even have a 50 cal full auto if your pockets are deep. It eats expensive bullets.

Settle down, Denis - geeze. Maybe I need to learn to use the green font, or all the little smiley winkie emoticons or something. I thought the sarcasm was obvious. Oh well. Maybe it's more fun to keep you folks guessing, so you overly emotional types can fly off the handle when someone ribs you a bit. You're the last guy I can see in a pink pussy hat (unless there's something you're not telling us).

Where do I find one of these pink pussy hats?

Your comment about your son was interesting, because I have considered similar. My oldest is 13, had a Red Ryder at 4, .22 rifle at 6, .22 Mosquito at 9, and a 686+ at 11. He also frequently shoots my multiple handguns, AR, and PS90, in addition to hunting with my brother in law and father in law. Always respectful and responsible, always takes guns seriously. Though my wife grew up shooting and can also easily handle a revolver, so I'm reasonably comfortable with her ability to defend herself as well. I travel often, so it's a concern for me.

I read the same updated article that John linked to. I also saw a picture of the house. It was a large, obviously upper class brick house on an acreage. Bad woman told the cops that she had identified the house as probably being full of expensive stuff and thought she could make a big score quickly by breaking in.

The bad guys had already broken into a guest house on the property earlier that day, which again suggests this is an expensive neighborhood, rather than a drug den. They came back to burglarize the main house when they stumbled into the homeowner's son. Son was holed up in his bedroom and called 911 from there, apparently after the shots were fired but he didn't know how many he hit. 911 operator told him to stay where he was an hold his gun until the cops got there, but to put it down and shout to the police when they got there. The 911 operator stayed on the line and communicated with the son and the responding sheriff until the son reported he was with the deputy and could put down the gun.

It doesn't sound like there was any connection between the home and the criminals other than they cased it, expecting it to be a rich target. Bad woman admitted to seeing the third guy run out onto the driveway but she left him behind. She did drive to a police station and turn herself in, though.

It's hard to tell from a couple of incomplete news articles, but it sounds like the house was the target of random violence and the son handled it about as well as possible.

The fact that the property was hit earlier in the day could explain why the son was ready and armed.

Exactly my thought, and a totally rational reaction.

if you put me on a jury anyone who shoots an intruder in their home is getting my vote for 'rational'. it's simply unfair to demand the homeowner/resident be competent enough to assess the danger of B&E perp prior to defending themselves. what if your wife or kids are murdered because you took too long trying to decide of the guy had a legit weapon? civilians just are not trained for this.

Another biased article trying to bring things into the report that don't belong:

https://www.yahoo.com/news/911-call-released-day-home-211000594.html

Quote:
A harrowing ordeal played out for 911 dispatchers as a caller revealed he had shot three teens after a home invasion in Oklahoma quickly turned fatal.

The three teens were shot by the 23-year-son of the homeowners in the town of Broken Arrow. Police say Zach Peters, a pilot living in his folks' home, grabbed an assault rifle when he heard the trio breaking in.

"I’ve been broken into," Peters says in a recently released 911 call. "Three men. Two I’ve shot in my house."

The dispatcher then asks: "Are they bleeding?"

"Yes, I believe one’s down," Peters replies. "One’s still talking. You need to get here now."

Later, he said: “I shot two of them and now I’m barricaded in my bedroom."

Max Cook, 16, Jacob Redfearn, 17, and Jake Woodruff, 18, were all killed. They were armed with a knife and brass knuckles. Two of them died in the kitchen of the home and the third made it to the driveway before collapsing.

Police said the teens were all wearing black and had their faces covered.

Police say the homeowners’ son is entitled to use deadly force under Oklahoma’s so-called "Make My Day Law" a nod to the classic line from Clint Eastwood's "Dirty Harry" Callahan in the 1983 film Sudden Impact.

Peters repeatedly asked officers if the teens were to going to "be alright," according to reports.

Peters was said to be “frightened” after the shooting, according to reports. A fourth member of the home invasion gang, 21-year-old getaway driver Elizabeth Rodriguez, gave herself up. She has been charged with murder.

Police said she knows the homeowners. She appeared stunned as she was led away to jail.

Court documents say Rodriguez "planned the burglary."

"She heard the gunshots then fled," cops said.

Inside Edition Security expert Steve Kardian suggests that if someone breaks into your home, "you can raise that gun, point it at their shoulder and pull the trigger to terminate what they are doing."

I'm guessing they had to look for awhile for a "security expert" to say that. Never mind that that might not work if the intruder is high (or pumped full of adrenaline) or highly motivated.

Wonder if this Kardian guy is a mall ninja type. Seems he's advocating for shooting near the heart. guess i'd have to agree.

the idea of shooting a gun at a human being for the purpose of anything short of killing them is ludicrous.

I like the way "Stand Your Ground" has been changed to "Make My Day" to make the homeowner seem to be more of a vigilante.
