Had a friend who's college aged son and 3 friends got a flat in the middle of no where. Called dad to find out how to change the tire. Once done the boys set off again leaving the flat tire and rim on the side of the road. None of them realized the rim was to be used again.

my BIL cannot change a tire.

i made fun of him relentlessly. right up to the point where my computer crashed and i needed his help.

we all have our super powers..honestly, i wish i was better at some of the new skills needed to navigate life than some of the old school skills.

there is only so many times you can feel good about taking down a tree with an axe. my computer has way many more issues..the computer could give an eff that i can shave my arm with my axe.

My dad wouldn't let me drive alone after I got my license until I could check my oil, check tire pressure and change the tire. Bare minimum stuff if you ask me.

Of course I had been a car guy before I got my license so it was no big deal...my sister on the other hand...

Great points. Avoiding mouth cancer is fairly manly.

I do however think every meat eater should at least kill and butcher some food. Even a chicken.

I have shot and field dressed, cut up an eaten a rabbit. Never found an interest in going much bigger. My brother is an avid deer hunter with a bow and arrow. He has had well over 100 deer on the roof of his VW camper (Westphalia) over the last 40+ years.

I have never actually smoked TOBACCO in a pipe, but I do know how to weld. I have grown an epic beard, carry a big knife, have a big facial scar, pulled several kittens out of trees, built a barn, not a cabin, have rebuilt 3 different engines, and hiked a day trip on "the trail".

Haven't carried a spare in years. Well the 88 911 has a never used "spare" but I just consider that ballast and an antique. A spare is a disadvantage as I see it.
I have a plug kit as others have shown, the Cayenne has a built in air compressor and the 911 has the portable compressor. Just jack it, plug the hole, re-inflate and get on your way-no lug nuts. That is much faster and therefore safer. If it's a sidewall issue, well I've never let my tires get that bad or driven onto a curb so thats the risk.
Had to change a flat in the Ted Williams Tunnel after leaving airport picking up my wife. There is no breakdown lane, people cruising around curves, very dangerous. You have about 5 minutes until a truck shows up and tows you with or without your permission. I was able to get patched and going while my wife was terrified and yes appreciation was shown later.

Ouch.

I taught my Daughter how to change a tire...went through the whole process, even getting her a breaker bar for the lug nuts (she knew not to jack the car until the lugs were loosened).

I wouldn't let her drive until she walked through it. She had no issues, understood. Under the hood, under the car...understand what you can.

My son worked at a friends auto repair shop when he turn 16 until he went to college...he may well have been Nostracarmus to his classmates.

In my yout I thought smoking was cool and being a rebel I didn't want to smoke cigarettes like everyone else so took up the pipe... it lasted about a year or two... same with cigars... as a friend of mine said waking up with the taste of tobacco in your mouth is no bueno.

I have a facial scar... 8-9 stitches on my eyebrow... I slipped in the bathtub, not sure if that counts I did drive myself to the emergency room.
I have encountered many rattlesnakes but never been bitten, they are more interested in eating rodents than biting people. I don't hunt but understand the ethic of harvesting your own meat.
Epic beard, saved cat from tree, carried a knife, check.

In general I don't think many people think about how a car works until it doesn't. Not knowing how to change a tire is the least of the crazy: I am back in school and taking a basic Chemistry class. My professor this week said that when you go to Autozone for them to check your battery, they are checking specific gravity and then adding acid to make it better(his words not mine). This is a man who has been teaching Chemistry at the HS and College level for 37 years.

A few cars back, I thought I was covered. Had a pump and a plug tool that would inject rubber cement and little mushroom plugs that would expand on the inside and pull back against the inside of the tire. (I wish I still had that thing) Anyway, a vehicle I was following kicked up a piece of road debris that I could not avoid. Sliced right through the side wall. Good thing I still had the spare. I still keep a plug kit with the stringy gummy worms. Last time I had to use it the unopened tube of cement was all dried up. Need to check those every few years.

Ouch.

My deal is we should be aware of those things we can influence as we wend our way through the day.

As a former military pilot I hated the "gotcha" questions about the aircraft when getting qualed: How many flux muxes are on the third mux?

Hated it.

So, I taught my kids to know and understand those things they should be aware of and how to react when driving.

BTW, I have always added acid to make it better...little surprised that you aren't onboard.

As for the man card, I grew a goatee once, biggest thing I ever shot was a feral hog, lots of little scars on my face, never saw a kitten stranded in a tree, never smoked, had to detour around a very angry rattle snake who was in the middle of the section of the Appalachian Trail that I was hiking, built a cabin but not out of logs, never encountered a purse snatcher, have tried Glenlivet but prefer Glenfiddish, rebuilt a few engines long ago, never been near a lumberjack contest, done loads of welding and I carry one of these. I guess I fail.

I never carried a spare in my old 911SC, it was part of its weight loss program. I removed the spare, tools and jack plus switched the massive 50 lb battery for the smallest one Autozone had. I also removed the A/C compressor, (big square piston-type). 2600 lbs. w a half tank of gas and stock seats, not bad.

I was running new tires and never got a flat. I had AAA w 100 mile towing if I ever did. And yes, I know how to change a tire. No beard.

I remember sitting in front of the Gulf station in Toledo at the air nozzle when I was maybe 11 with two pals. Flat tire on a bike. 1967-ish.

Wrench there sold us a little kit to fix the inner tube in a can with the scratchy thing on top. Scratch the rubber, set the glue on fire, etc. (hell yes, we had matches) He walked us through it.

I would guess just from that I knew a wheel was not disposable.

Imagine today, an 11 year old "embryo" interfacing with a grease monkey. He would be labeled a potential child molester.

I have no problem with a tire.... over the years have done brakes, radiator, rear end, and of course change the oil/spark plugs.

But to be honest I'm somewhat baffled by modern cars, I can add fluids and change filters but that is about it.
