Things like this have always happened unfortunately, we’re just hearing about them more (both in terms of rapidity of reporting and sensationalism).

This is what happens when you have “managed mental health care” (which usually means, “take two aspirin and good luck - NEXT!”) The state of mental health care in this country is abysmal.

agree with tabs.

there is a 'pressure' created by our way of life that isn't letting up. lines are being crossed on every front...political, sexual, racial, financial....too much radical change with no guiding principles.

If the previous statements about the shooter are true: felon, was discharging firearms, attacked his neighbors previously - the issue isn't gun control. There are already laws in CA that make it illegal to: possess firearms within 1000ft of a school, possess firearms if you are a convicted felon, assault someone with a deadly weapon (knife or firearm), own a firearn with certain features (like removable magazines) , own "large capacity" magazines (more than 10 rounds) , discharge a firearm within city limits, and within a certain distance of roads. These are just a few of the many laws on the books. How did none of these laws stop this guy?

The reason the state of mental health care in this country is abysmal is no one wants to pay for it... there is no magic pill to treat the mentally ill. It is a long, expensive process with absolutely no guarantee of the results of the treatment. "We" made this decision decades ago and it has come home to roost....

The largest mental health facility here in Houston is the Harris County Jail and I suspect it is that way in most large cities. Lock them up and give them powerful anti-psychotic drugs them turn them loose after a while.

And some of the mass shooters had obvious signs that they might be dangerous but can you lock them up or commit them indefinitely on what they "might" do. The Las Vegas shooter showed no signs of anything as far as I have read?

I have to agree with PetrolBlueSC, this is the new normal, just prepare your kids as best you can and hope you aren't in the wrong place at the wrong time.

It would also help if people just turned off talk radio and the 24 hour news channels. The sole purpose of much of it appears to be just to agitate their listeners......

Depending on your age or where you grew up, you may have learned in school how to react to earthquakes, tornadoes, or even air raid warnings. Today's kids are learning how to react to active shooters. My kids' high school does several "practices" a year so that kids know how to react in the event someone starts shooting up the school. It's a sad state our country is in...

Very sad. Living in the Adirondacks for upstate NY we do drills as well. We have also equipped the schools with wound packets for all students and staff.

Too many felons are on the streets and many states are working hard to restore any rights they lost. Vagrancy laws have all but been eliminated and social welfare keeps all but the worst off the radar. Keep felons locked up for their full sentence (then monitor them), reinstitute vagrancy laws and cut social welfare to the bone and folks who should be taken off the streets (or at least talked to) will be much easier identified...and those who are not will be kept too busy feeding themselves and providing housing to get involved in craziness.

I went to 11 different schools from 1st to 12th grade. They all had fire drills. We had a LOT of "duck and cover" drills for a nuclear bomb attack especially in the 1960s during the Cuban missile attack. Even as a kid we knew that hiding under a cheap school desk was not going to help in with a nuclear explosion.

It actually can make a big difference to put anything you can reasonably do between you and it.

The sun is a nuclear reaction, think of just how thin of sun screen it takes to keep from getting burnt over hours of exposure. Or just a hat.

While a nuclear explosion is going to be closer than the sun, and thus more intense, the same principle still applies to significant parts of the potential damage.

Although today's multi war head that lay out lots of smaller nuclear hits will have a far greater kill zone for their power. But back in your day with large singles it could make a difference.

Yup. We gave up on the big'uns for that reason. They don't scale very well, I think only with the square and the cube of the yield (for different effects). My copy of Glasstone is at work...

Flying glass and thermal burns allegedly do most of the killing.

Even our daycare does emergency drills. Delicate to explain that to our 4yo.

Given Vegas, Texas and now CA the only logical conclusion is to ban white guys from buying guns.

I paid my first social security at age six, try explaining at that age why what you earned and what you got didn't match up...

You mean which ones should he have been on, he probably was not taking any.

Mental healthcare is the worst in California. Mr Reagan cut the funding, and they ended up on the streets. Nobody put the money back.

Weather here is nice to attract them, and there are extremely generous social welfare benefits to keep them.

This guy, like the one in Texas, was already restricted from legally owning firearms.

From https://apnews.com/0eaca5a9bc86433fb8706207ec81862a/Police-knew-'madman'-had-illegal-guns-before-killing-rampage

Quote:
Police on Wednesday called the deadly shooting rampage in California a clear case of “a madman on the loose” while defending their decision not to arrest the man for previously violating a court order prohibiting him from having guns.

At a tense news conference, police conceded that neighbors had repeatedly complained about Kevin Neal firing hundreds of rounds from his house among other erratic and violent behavior.

Tehama County Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston said authorities responded to neighbors’ calls several times, but the 44-year-old Neal wouldn’t open the door, so they left.

“He was not law enforcement friendly. He would not come to the door,” Johnston said. “You have to understand we can’t anticipate what people are going to do. We don’t have a crystal ball.”

My guess is that he had taken them, and 'recently stopped taking them.'

Yes indeed. But getting this highly divided country to agree on anything, let alone guns may just be a dream at this point. Sad but true.

Something does need to change

Perhaps we could try enforcement of current laws to start

DING DING DING!!!

Yea, just enforce the current laws. That would have stopped him. And the nut in Texas shooting up a church.

Gun laws can restrict honest citizens from getting a gun, no law will stop lawbreaker. They will work almost as well as the current drug laws for stopping illegal drugs.

How about this law, make it illegal to kill people at random.
