I too drive using the same cautions as riding my road bike. Trust no one, look for their eyes on you, always have an escape, and get away from scary and distracted drivers.

Glad the OP came out of the accident healthy and hope that the repairs don’t go into the structure. Hope the other driver was insured. Keep your parts, the install will just be delayed a bit.

After thousands of first-hand observations (over about 4000 miles) there appears to be a correlation between neighborhood demographic and driver courteousness. Other cyclists corroborate my observations. It seems drivers in some areas drive as if they have something to prove by passing closer and faster than necessary. In other areas drivers are very patient and courteous. I guess the point is to be aware of your surroundings and watch more closely accordingly.

The car is back in my hands more than 14 months after the accident. Was in the shop for 13 months. I think it turned out really well. Was lucky to have a body shop that was familiar with this car.

Am excited to drive it again. Need to change the oil - I changed it a few months before the wreck and only put a few hundred miles on it, but better safe than sorry. Going to do the air and fuel filter too. Also plan on changing the brake fluid. Have several boxes of parts that I've been accumulating that are ready to go on but am glad to have it back.

Total damage was $11,500 which was more than twice the initial estimate. Some hidden damage in there. Will be super careful driving it and will keep an eye out for distracted drivers and big ol' trucks.

I had a colleague at work wreck his Alfa Romea Guilia Quadrifoglio due to inexperience with HP and RWD and a bit of hooning. I think they told him that it was going to be $15k. When he went to pick it up, they added another $30k. The local Ferrari dealership did the work.

That's awesome but why did a fairly simple repair take a year?

I wouldn't change the oil for nothing. Just drive the snot out of it and get it cooking. Nothing happened to your brand new oil sitting in the sump for a year. I'm a maintenance freak but the idea that oil goes bad sitting in an engine is BS, unless it's 50 years or something. IMO, of course.

Well, I made the mistake of telling them to take their time, it's not my daily driver and no rush. They took me seriously I'm glad they didn't rush it though because they really did do a great job.

Thanks for the advice on the oil. I read many differing opinions about the age of the oil etc and figured it was cheap insurance. But I may just "drive the snot out of it" this weekend since we finally have some decent weather.

No Celette, thank goodness. Just lots of hidden damage and paint and body labor. Plus all OEM parts (except the front embellisher aka valence and spoiler) added up. They had to blend the hood, firewall, door and a couple other areas, too. The bumper was able to be repaired but they had to order a new bumper shock because the old one was slightly tweaked. The part took several weeks to arrive from Germany. They sublet the headlights and alignment work and that took about a month at another shop.

Thanks. I didn't bump the coverage yet. Hagerty has been terrific throughout this whole ordeal but I'm going to wait until I renew in May or June.

I agree, but with a caveat. This is only really true on air-cooled cars. On water-cooled cars, (particularly the 996 and Boxster), the coolant slowly seeps into the oil it the car sits for a long time. So, the oil gets contaminated just doing nothing.

But the air-cooled cars don't really deteriorate...

That is such a pretty color, glad the end of the story is happy, that is a long time waiting, but it looks fantastic, just as the weather is getting nice.

Low and a subtle shade means you have to drive it like a motorcycle, you are invisible and everyone else is on their phone is the attitude I try to take.
