Does anyone make aftermarket sunroofs for BMWs?

Got a $5k estimate for the sunroof repair on Mrs. Lee's 2014 X1. It got smashed by a rock kicked up on the hwy. Everyone has glass coverage in AZ, but this dollar amount may kick it up to a comprehensive claim, which means $1000 deductible. Everyone in AZ has glass coverage with no deductible and claims don't count as at-fault events. The estimate started out at $2300, but, once they began work, they said the entire mechanism needs to be replaced. $5k minimum.

And BTW, USAA has been worse than terrible about all this and I'll be shopping elsewhere once this claim is done.

It got smashed by a rick

LOL.

I'm not clear on why the entire mech needs to be replaced.

A Freudian slip, but I corrected it. Gawd, I do want to smash this car. Not the car's fault about the rock, but the price for this is just insane. I haven't seen it since they pulled it apart, but USAA will send someone to personally inspect it this week.

Does anyone use a sunroof? Just bought a new truck and chose one without!

Good luck finding a high-end euro import without one.

Must've been one hell of a rock to smash that mechanism. You sure?

I pulled the sunroof itself out of my E39 several times, just four bolts and pulling way the accordion things on the side. Wasn't **** nothing to do.

Indeed http://forums.pelicanparts.com/off-topic-discussions/979996-finding-slicktop-non-sunroof-car.html

Personally I've never understood the "everything must have a sunroof" thing.

Ironically, my 356 has a sunroof, but I'd just as soon do without.

A used complete unit is the only logical answer. They are not destroyed in an collision unless the car rolled or was really crushed, there are plenty of those cars out there and I'm sure they're all interchangeable within that chassis.

I'd also think that it's a low demand part that you can get a deal on. This is not complicated, don't know why it's being made so.

Here you go:

Took about 10 seconds. Just use this site and put in your own zip code, they are $3-500 complete on the first page:

Link didn't work.

This place: Car-Part.com - Used Auto Parts Market

And to answer the first question, definitely no one makes these aftermarket.

It is crazy isn't it? BMW only sells it as a "cassette" which is the entire unit at an astronomical price. I just never opened up my sunroof again after it broke. .
It is a little bit of a job to replace on on an x 5. Gotta take out lots of trim panels , and the roof panel

I'm usually never one to defend an insurance company but I could definitely see them balking at a $5k glass claim for a rick chip.

I ran into the same thing when I needed a VANOS hub for my M3; I had to buy the whole shebang, and only used the one part - tossed the rest.

I ordered my M235 with the sunroof delete option. The idiot salesman gave me a hard time about selecting it too. After reading this thread though, I definitely made the right choice. Best of luck getting it fixed.

That car will have good resale value someday.

It was a baseball size hole when she got to a place where she could pull over, not a rock chip. And I also understand why USAA would balk at the price. But then they should have special prices negotiated or third parties who can source slightly used, but serviceable parts. Farming this out to Safelite and then a fourth party who could do nothing but refer us to the dealer probably added some cost and definitely added some time here. Still no word from them on this. Been over two weeks now.

I have been with USAA for decades and have had no problem with them, safelight (USAA's glass repair default) fixed a crack in my windshield for $100 deductible.

I'm surprised USAA didn't send you to an 'authorized' body shop for a quote (seems like this is way beyond a glass repair), that is all I ever had to do. Dude at the shop comes out and takes some pictures, emails them to USAA with a quote, I get a check.
