Inside the house a M1897 12 ga, outside a M14 7.62 and in the car a colt M1911 A1 and or a couple of Ruger 357's to discourage car jackers. For fun and coyotes a Marlin 94 45 colt. And a few more cause you can't ever have to many guns.

You want frangible ammo for in home use to avoid over penetration.

imagine the noise?! indoors??!! i would have to tell the badguy, "TIMEOUT!" and put on earplugs.."okay, game on"..then shoot the guy. anywhere.
i bet in a small room, it cracks a window. my friend has one with a muzzle brake. i wont be at the same range with him. it knocks dust up off the ground.

The AR-15 pattern rifles make great home defense weapons with a few caveats.
Easy to mount a red dot sight and good light. Low recoil and easy to reload quickly if needed. Much lower risk of over penetration than other options such as handguns, shotguns or 7.62 NATO rifle with the correct ammunition selection. Hornady use to have tests available, as well as other entities showing the bullets exit the first wall in small fragments. Noise! For anyone who has not shot indoors your unprotected hearing is in danger. Your odds of hearing damage is greater with a rifle round (higher pressure and volume) than a pistol. A suppressor certainly helps. S/F, FOG |

Even most cans out there won't bring a 10.3" SBR down to "hearing safe" levels (and certainly not "Hollywood quiet"), but it's sure better than no-can. I believe that is one of the primary reasons that .300BLK has become so popular. That is the closest thing to "Hollywood quiet" I've heard from any suppressed center-fire rifle-caliber round so far. |

9mm penetrates almost as well as the 0.223/5.56. 00 Buck again, very similar penetration.

In talking to the police, border patrol, FBI and other law enforcement types they pretty much all say a 12 or 20 gauge shot gun with double ought buckshot is what they have at home for their spouse when they are at work. The shot gun is an semi auto unless their wife or girl friend has practiced quite a lot with a pump. The first shot is okay but then the total panic probably sets in and a slide is hard for them. For a guy well it doesn't matter unless they have shot back at some one as punching holes in paper doesn't count much. The gun noise, smoke, screaming of the bad guy if you hit them is a tad hard to get used to.
If you need a pistol then a revolver is probably better choice as if there is a mis fire then just pull the trigger again. S&W is making their Custom Shop TRR8 and model 66 in 8 shot models and 357 loads are good especially if the bad guy has lots of jackets/sweats on as they can act almost like body armor. |

I have seen lots of videos on home defense calibers and IMO any round that you rely on to stop a threat is going to penetrate traditional sheet rock/stud walls. As already said there are 556 rounds that can limit the reach to less than 9/40/45/OO buck. |

Drywall is a joke for a .223. Of course it will penetrate.
For me: Colt .45 in nightstand Shotgun under bed 1 ar-15 in each of two closets upstairs with 2 full 30 round clips Sig 226 in my car / concealed carry My wife, who you do not want to mess with, carries and has in her car a S&W bodyguard .380 Many others just stashed/locked in the house Anyone here actually been in a firefight? Your talking about this stuff like you watched it on TV or have been on too many gun forums.

Here I am on Superbowl Sunday with a $30k, real MP-40. It was pretty quiet and with very low recoil. Can't afford such a thing for home defense, but there is a newer semi-auto version out there.

As will most common pistol calibers. Some even more "lethally" so than .223.

A shotgun would be my choice for a weapon for home defense. Very intimating and hard to miss. Just shoot from the hip and aim relatively close and its a hit. You're probably going to be in close quarters and if you miss with a rifle or pistol for whatever reason, the perp could be on you before you get another shot off.

Spread pattern. At 10 meters (30 feet), the spread is 20cm (8 inches).
