So today i'm plowing one of our dirt roads (3rd nor'easter in 12 days). I round a bend and a women is walking on the left side of the road. I plow past her and turn around at the town line about an 1/8th of a mile up the road. Get down to where she is and...... yup she's still on that side of the road. So i'm rapidly approaching, snow billowing off the end of the plow and.....she keeps walking.
I end up having to slow down and finally she puts 2 and 2 together and moves to the other side.

Common sense is not so common any more.

we jumped off this cruise ship and rented a pair of tiny-ass Renaults to drive to Mt Olympus. the renter asked me if i wanted a map.."he was down to his last copy"..i looked at it and it was exactly one straight run and a right turn. i said, "no, i got this"

my BIL and Sister took the last map..and it was just a piece of white paper with a line and a right turn. i kid you not..we get to the turn and THEY GO LEFT!! WTF? i mean there is a line of damn buses going up the hill with MT OLYMPUS on that sign up front..you had to be a moron to get lost.

well, i won that road race. i bet they had the map held sideways. they were the only car to take that left. worst vacation in my entire life. she yelled at me for getting her lost.
I met your sister. She doesn’t need common sense.

There have been plenty of times I have taken something apart and put it back together with nuts, bolts, screws leftover and have it work perfectly.

Obviously they were over engineered.

You can't teach common sense - you either got it or you don't

Pause and think about who posts here- a bunch of gear heads.

Bottom line is we have a lot more skills than most people.

Gear heads and cockroaches will survive the apocalypse.

One day he's up there and walks by a Phd student standing at a drill press. He's got a tap chucked in the drill and a piece of metal on the table. My brother asked him what he was doing. "I'm going to tap a hole in the metal so I can screw a bolt in."
Uh, don't you think you should drill the hole first, then tap it?
No, I thought that's what the tap is for.

You get the idea.
The guy was amazed that my bro knew what size tap drill to use off the top of his head. He even showed him how to use the tap drill chart that was hanging on the wall right next to the drill press.

What is it they say Phd stands for?
Oh yeah, Piled Higher and Deeper.
Not so fast genius. If you never had dealt with a TV set before how would you know you had to plug it in first. Show the guy the ropes and he should be good to go.

If he cant figure it out then..
Ohhh well.

That is exactly what I posted on this Board lots and lots of times.

So you might say i am proficient at the art of being influential after all.

I have done that with myself. Now not only do I know how i work but I know how you all work as well. I have been at it for over 4 decades. Plying my trade for some 250,000 hours.

What you people do and having common sense is mutually exclusive.

We stand on the shoulders of giants, and wag our fingers at children.

How do we avoid making mistakes ? By Experience.
How do we get experience ? By Making Mistakes.

Perhaps we shelter kids today from the experiences that they need as children.
Perhaps as we get older, we become more jealous of youth, and less willing to mentor.
It is always easier to point a finger than to raise a helping hand, but I'm glad my Grandfather took the time to mentor me. And of course his favorite phrase was ''Common sense is not very common.''.

It has always been thus. Raise them up.

My father in law was a mechanic and at one point in his life had a small International Harvester dealership. After he retired he spent his days in a 3 bay garage he had in the back yard. Always had some weird car back there that he picked up for free or close to nothing. Cars like Crickets, odd Isuzus, tons of Chevettes, whatever he could get for pennies. At one point he was trying to slap a Nissan turbo charger on one of the Chevettes. Anyway, one night my wife and I come home with a new VCR. He comes over and asked what we bought, we tell him and go inside to hook it up. About an hour later he calls us and asks if I took it apart yet. I tell him no, why should I it's brand new, works fine. And his response, and I'll never forget it was " Jesus Christ, if you don't take it apart to see how it works while it's working, how are you gonna fix it when it breaks!" I really never looked at it that way.
