Thanks everyone and sorry.
first time I've had a chance. Very busy week. Maybe talk more when this is all over but for now I'll just say to each their own. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In the distance is the Kettle river. It runs to the left of the picture and takes a slow right turn and another right and runs along in front of our homes. The water right in front is Rock Creek.. Last week the water got so high the Kettle straightened out and came right across Rock Creek for about 100ft and came right through my neighbors property ,Through his ,mine and two more neighbors. The way the houses sit on the street the fourth house in line gets a direct hit . They are completely sandbagged and five pumps going. The river went down but we are about to have another event that is predicted to be 25% bigger so we have been busy. Today we built that wall to hopefully hold it back or slow it down . Truck load after truckload we have a wall built now full length of the creek. So to answer some ones question . That's what I do. I don't ever leave unless there is absolutely no other choice. I'll do whatever it takes to try to save not only my home but the street. My insurance company has confirmed I'm all covered and already had a rep here today and I'm good, just call them when it's all over and they'll redo whatever. So I could leave. Stay in a hotel on the Gov dime but that's not me . Been getting up at 4.30 every day to do my sandbagging before the 30degree heat. I had 2ft of water in the basement but got it pumped out. Have more pumps now and the second event is just starting .Going to last a lot longer. The water in the check area I have in the basement has risen 6in since this morning . I'm coffeed up now. Probably going to be an all nighter but it's all in how you look at it. You never enter a race thinking you are going to loose do you ? I do appreciate all the thoughts and kind messages and emails. Thanks everyone |

Thanks everyone. I think the worst is over. Big thunderstorms never developed on Thursday so that helped. River is still high and water still coming into the basement because the water table is so high so we will have to keep pumping until it drops enough.. Next weekend we are suppose to get almost 3inches of rain . That's a week away so hoping that forecast changes a bit or river goes down enough so it won't matter. Backyard is not covered in water anymore . At it's height it picked up my 10x10 solid wood gazebo and lifted it out of the ground 1ft so it's sitting out now. Fence is a mess ,all leaning over, posts pulled out but all in all not so bad. I even cut the front lawn yesterday to get back to some sort of normal. I want to express my appreciation to all who chimed in and sent messages etc. They all helped and I appreciate everyone who took the time to write. Thanks guys.

Being where I live, I am always looking to the East to the Caribbean with a weary eye. Wondering when the next Cat 4 or Cat 5 Hurricane is going to pound me like a $5 hooker in Singapore during a Navy shore leave. I have not posted much here during those events, it takes me days to get ready battening down everything. Constantly learning what other things I can do to prevent damage etc.. Seems you already know, you cannot have enough sump pumps where you live. I am glad you were able to save your property, I hope your insurance company appreciates this and does not hammer you and lump you in with all the folks that did nothing and let their homes sustain damage. Sadly, Insurance companies do not really care. In 2004 I knew the roof on my office was not going to last in the Cat 3 Hurricane on its way to me. I wrapped all the valuable things in my office in saran wrap. Copy machine, file cabinets etc... I sent every employee home with their computer, eggs in a basket type of thing, I took home my computer and server. Office was destroyed, everything in saran wrap was saved. We were able to open up shop days later with the only loss being furniture. Insurance company payout was minimal, they tripled my rates then dropped me. So much for saving my office. Glad you pulled through, I hope mother nature is gentle with you for a while and lets you recover. Oh and I laughed at mowing the lawn, every hurricane that is the first thing I do after the storm is passed. With no power and nothing else to do after we clean up, it makes me feel like life is returning to normal while I am mowing the lawn.

Dodged that one but the latest windstorm made up for it.
22 trees down on the creek and our big pines all went down . They are thinking possibly up to 80mph winds other morning at 4am. No power for 24hrs and just got wifi back. Neighbor did the big cut which was a bugger because the tree twisted.I had to limb it with a hand saw. When power came back I did the rest with my sawsall.. Chainsaw not working. Where there is a will there is a way. Before and after pic. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Just another arrow. No big deal.

Those were some big old trees.
Glad you are OK. On the bright side, lots of firewood....
