Paint 101
Guys,
Just reading through some of these topics there is some amazing knowledge that honestly blows my mind. So cool that you guys are willing to pass along this information to the rest of us. My question is this: Is there an article or youtube that I can review that will help me with the basics of paint and primer? I want to be able to do some basic repaints of bumpers, valances, small parts, trim etc. While I'd love to learn how to do an entire car I live in the people's republic of California so that is mostly verboten. I'd like to get a small airbrush, learn the right preps, primers, and basic techniques. Appreciate all the tips/recommendations in advance. |

Primers bare metal: etching primer or epoxy primer
Build primer goes over above mentioned then sanded Sealer goes over build primer, sealers are optional Basecoat is your color either single stage (final coat) or base plus clear. Clear goes over basecoat and then sanded down and buffed. These are just the basics, best to stick with one product line and follow TDS sheets. Your local jobber should be able to help you out. A lot of misinformation on YouTube Porsche 962 is a wealth of knowledge here, I learned a lot from him. |

yup YouTube is very hit or miss for DIY body and paint info.
I have watch some of the videos and just cringed at what some were saying how you should do things. some guys with 40 years of body work and paint time are still stuck in the past doing things like they did back in the 70's others simply have no idea of what they are doing and simply are hacks. you will also find this to be the same on many body and paint forums. do not waste your money on an airbrush they are great for artwork but not for spraying anything on cars. you would want a mini gun but even a mini gun will have limitations as to what you can use it on. you will be hard pressed to spray anything bigger than a license plate with even a mini gun. CT and CA pretty much have the same laws when it comes to spray painting. you can do it and you just have to use your head doing it not to have the man come down on you. you can spray in your own garage as long as you have proper ventilation. both states frown on just spraying outside. there are many people on this forum willing to help with your projects all you have to do is ask questions. |
