So are you saying that someone changed it? This is a 68 car. I do know the deck lid is not original to the car. The PO told me that was the only panel he has ever had to replace. Maybe he changed the grill at that time? If this is not the correct grill, which grill is correct? Pictures please.

Here's what you can do with the '68 grill. These are photos of mine before, during and after.
Grill before.

Grill removed and taken apart. You can see a bit of the waviness of the bars.

Each bar is numbered.

Bars realigned during a couple hours of watching TV. The remaining parts were cleaned and painted.

Back together again.

Your grill should be correct for your car since you have a really late vin (i.e. one of the last 40 Porsche bodied 68 912's made according to the vin tables). The 3 bar showed up late in the 68's and carried through the 69 912's.

John, nice job on the grill.

As another poster has suggested, it probably is right for your car, as a matter of fact my 68 has the same grille, (and i have all the records from 68 to 98 on it with no change indicated) but it is not the standard issue grille from 65-68, it was only around in 69, than changed again.

Nice job on that grille John

There were many changes done on the 68 including in the mid to late run. Besides the grill there were the door frames from brass to aluminum and the door handles just to name a couple.

So here are some questions for the day.
1. how much $ have others paid to re-chrome my factory wheels. dated coded etc.
2. if too much, may just store them and find some fuchs 6x15. let me know if you have some.
3. what size tires are you guys running? I know stock is 165HR15 but I know you can change to a meatier tire.
4. what brand of tire have you run that has classic looks and good performance?
5. do those numbers on the grill bars start at the top or bottom. just trying to figure which number I am missing. I am missing the next to last on the bottom.

Next question. This engine is complements of DarrylD. Beautiful of course. Question is, what are these tubes? On my car, someone had used pipe insulation wrapped in electrical tape which was totally dry rotted.

Oh, now that you mention it, I did notice the vents peeking out in the corners. So what is the proper, factory tubing/ hose to use? Where does the air come from? What prevents the car from filling with fumes etc?

Air comes off the heat exchangers, which if they don't have any holes in them won't allow any exhaust into the heating system. The tubes were originally soft foam with zip ties holding them at each end.

So what is the recommended hose to use? I did not know they had zip ties in 68? I think that is what was on mine, but it looked so hokey I thought a PO had done it.

Next question:
which Euro head light is correct for the 68-912? H1 or H4. I know H1 are not available, just wondering. Also, which brand, Hella or Bosch? Pics would help. There seem to be a lot of variations for sale out there. Just want to make sure I get the right ones. DarrylD, I know you know. I saw them on your web, but it does not specifically say what they are. Thanks again.

I also have a '68 912 in Burgundy Red.
I also have the same grill and believe it to original.

Could you please scan and post the original window sticker. I would love to recreate one for my car?

Have fun and enjoy the 912.

Randal

Randal, looks like our cars are sisters. Your car looks like it is in beautiful condition. You have had her a long time. The guy I got mine from had if since 1977, 33 years. My window sticker is from the local dealer, not the factory. I have it scanned at the office. Did you add the Fuchs wheels? Are they 15x6? What size tires are you running?

Merbesfield,

Thank you for the compliment.

I added the Fuchs several years ago.
They are 1969 dated 15x6 Deep Sixes w/Hearts running 195/60/15 tires.

I have in the past run 15x5.5 chrome steel wheels with 165sr15 tires and 15x6 cookie cutters with 195/60/15 tires.

Each wheel and tire combo definitely changes the look of the car.
