I did a 6 cylinder in my Karmann Ghia a couple of years ago . . .
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v136/TeamEvil/File0002.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v136/TeamEvil/File0003.jpg Just finished up the new 4.1 liter for the back of the 356 SC, thought that I'd run a VW engine this time . . . http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v136/TeamEvil/eng12.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v136/TeamEvil/eng9.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v136/TeamEvil/eng8.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v136/TeamEvil/eng5.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v136/TeamEvil/eng1.jpg Probably not what you meant., but . . . then again . . . I AM Evil. |
Cool project. I'm considering a 53 bent window coupe right now, outlaw, of course. WHat kind of job was it to fit the early rear suspension to your tub?
|
To install the early SWB rear IRS arms, you must remove the original transmission mounts; notch the torsion tube center section to fit the 901 nose cone; weld in the IRS arm pivot- mount, (this pivot/mount must be aligned correctly for proper tracking). Not a job most people would like to do for the first time.

356RS
Mark:
Is your car still at Autos International? I'd like to take a closer look. Thanks, Joe |
Hi Joe,
No, It's back in Oregon and I'm getting the motor and trans together now. Should be on the road in 3 months or sooooo....... Mark |
wow, wow, WOW! you better get that camera working there bud. You've been holding out on us LOL!

356RS
Thanks Mark. I think I saw your car when I was there a few weeks ago. I didn't think to ask Augustine to check out the motor.
Does your car have the magnesium case? How much lighter is the mag case motor than the aluminum 930 case? It would seem that any weight savings would help in the short wheelbase car. Anyway, congrats on the beautiful car and craftsmanship. I was hoping you could make it to the Dana Point 356 Show in July. Later, Joe |
Thanks Joe,
Yes it has the 7R mag case and the mag 915 trans case. Although the 915 weights more than the 901. The oil tank is forward of the rear wheel base, in the right rear fender just behind the passenger door like the 72 911. Also with the engine and trans moved forward 4 inch's from rear axle center line ( removed the center of torsion bar for this mod.), this will help get the weight a little more forward. Mark |
Inlaws and Outlaws
Mark:
I think your project personifies what an "outlaw" is all about. A few years back I asked Gary Emory about putting a 911 motor in a 356, by the look on his face I could tell that I had crossed some line and was now another Yahoo. It turns out that this has been done many times with mixed results. The approach you have taken to minimize the weight with the mag case engine and trans will certainly help. Even Intermechannica puts 911 motors in their replicars. The successful attempts have all moved the firewall back (and engine forward) as you have to improve the weight transfer. You probably have seen the attached photo but if not maybe you should also add a wheelie bar. Stay Outlawed, JoePorsche http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showt...ht=356+Wheelie |
I saw this twice this weekend, can't help you much except to say it is a complete 930 drive with the rear fenders about 3/4 inch wider to fit bigger tires. This car was real good looking.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1184037632.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1184037652.jpg

Does anyone know the owner of this beautiful outlaw? I would love to find out how this was all engineered.

I put a 2.2/6 in a 65 C ratrod.....fun.

We're doing some metal conversion work for this car. We bought a 912 chassis for the donor rear tube and suspension. The trans will be a 69 901 5 speed. The motor currently being considered is a 2.7 RS spec mfi unit.
The torsion tube got an internal sleeve, rosette welded to add strength. We also added the lower plates from the tube to the inner seat belt anchors. We will be installing the rear engine mount section from a 911- waiting for the back part of a rust free car to show up. So more pics soon We have a 70 oil tank set up for it in a "stock" 911 position. It will get a pair of front mounted oil coolers with lines running down the passenger side rocker Shock mounts on the chassis will be raised slightly and the bottom mount on each control arm rotated to match the geometry. This is not as extensive a project as the pretty silver one, but the end result should be a lot of fun Thanks to Tony Gerace (TLG) for guidance and advice. It saved us time and effort! more pics as we move along with the project http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1184701797.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1184702375.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1184702507.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1184702667.jpg |
I just posted more pictures of the black 64 turbo in the Outlaw thread, should have put them here but messed up.

Thanks Dean... Good job tracking him down. Did he talk about the handling at all? It looks mean. SmileWavy |
The way he talks they did a lot of work to it, it sounds like a fun, really fast car, it weighs a few hundred more than stock but has lots more HP. He will be taking it to Ventura in September. It is pretty new as it is and he is driving it more. He didn't know about this site so now he maybe watching it, maybe he will sign in.

another 356 6cyl conversion
Below are some work in process and "finished" photos of my 6cyl 356/930 outlaw conversion.
In building the vehicle, I was fortunate the mechanic, fabriactor, body/paint shop owner and upholsterer allowed me to work on the vehicle with them in their shops. I wound up with a lot of new knowedge, a pretty cool little vehicle and some great new friends. Whether installing a 6cyl 911 type engine in a 356 is right for you depends on the intent of the conversion. My intent was to build a strong and reliable street rod and I believe we suceeded. As to handling of this little old sports car - Adding approximately 350# behind the rear axel of a vehicle that is already out of balance [60/40] does nothing to improve its track prowess. It's easy to put any 356 into a spin. It's even easier with its added weight and 4-times the power. If you have questions about the vehicle or its modifications, drop me a line.
