Any 6cyl conversion's out there??????
If you know of any links or have any pics of a 911 6 cyl conversions please let me know..... Has anybody driven one? whats its like? Is it worth it?
I want to rebuild my 2.4E motor for my 62B. Its either going to be a hot 2.5L or 2.7L Let me know what you find Thanks |
Think you'll have to do a lot of work to cram one in there... A better option may be the 4 cyl. 911 motor that the Emory's make, or just a hot Type 4...

I did one. I can post some pic's if you want. Fits very nice. Easy to change spark plugs, not that easy to change fan belt. I moved the eng/trans foward 4 '' so now it's easy for fan belt r&r.

A few questions 1- Is it possible to use the 356 trans or do you have to use a 901 or 915 trans? 2-did you have to cut the torsion tube or modify the firewall at all? 3- what Cv joints are using? 4- what rear suspension are you using ect... 5- are you still using torsion bars or did you have to swap to a coil-over set up? I am sure I am missing a bunch of questions but over all, if you can let me know what has to be moded. Is your car running yet? thanks again Mark |
Hi Herman,
1. I would not recommend using the 356 trans. Two reasons; the 911 engine ends up to far back in the engine bay and adds more weight to the tail end, not to mention that you can't find the distributor or change the fan belt or install a muffler system. The 901 5-speed is a better choice and can handle the more torque and HP. The 915 is better yet but needs more mods to the car so it fits right. 2. I choose to cut the torsion tube center area so I could fit a 915 gearbox and also moved the rear seat/firewall forward 5" to move weight forward and have the 911 engine fit perfect in the engine bay. Lots of room for a muffler, distributor timing and fan belt service. 3. With the transmission forward 4" of the rear wheel centerline, I used 930 CV joints to handle the angle of the axle. I had to order custom length shorter axles. 4. I used 65-68 early IRS arms, modified the shock mount on the end of the IRS arm so I could still use the stock shock mount on the car. Works great, E-brakes too. 5. I used 25mm short torsion bars. Added 3" to spring plate tube because of the area I removed from the center of torsion tube. Hope this answers some of your questions. |

That (your) conversion looks nice and clean. Any idea when the compltion date will be...? Is it already done? When I lived in CT there was a dark green 6 cyl converted 356 that I used to see out and about. Would turn after hearing familiar flat-6 sound and then see the tub ... got me every time. |

Getting close to painting, silver met. This is the end of seven years on the car. Seven years ago I was thinking I could take a Honda with my 200 plus hp, now I don't know. Anyway, you are soo right about the sound of the MFI 911 engine..... I'll keep you posted. |

Mark, the fuel lines to the MFI console look very nice. Good job.
Like you we used a 901 box and early 911 trailing arms/spring plates. However, we're still running a hot-rod type 4. Your project looks healthy ... what oil door is that? Scavenged from a 72? |
Marco, I'm using a 915 gearbox. The oil door I had to make. The 72 door is bigger and has a semi flat shape to it. The one for my outlaw has two bends in it to match the 356 rear fender area. It took me two weeks to do the oil door stuff.
I'm off to SoCal tomorrow, towing my car to AutoInternational for the interior. |
Looks like I missed the part about the 915 - as you said, "better yet."
That oil door/filler area is top notch. It didn't look like a 72 filler door in the photo, and now that you mention the exact differences between the two it's even more glaring. However, I thought you may have started with a 72 door and and modified it to suit your needs. It's even better that you made the whole thing from scratch. Top quality work. The only question is when does it hit the street? 8 years is 7 years too many. Gotta get that fix. :D |
